Box Score ARCATA – The 'Senior Night' mission was accomplished. Humboldt State and the trio of senior players were victorious over Cal State Dominguez Hills, 66-57, in their final time on the Lumberjack Arena floor.
The Lumberjacks established a lead midway through the first half and held off a second Toros' threat to take away the key California Collegiate Athletic Association victory.
"We are still alive as far as the (CCAA) playoff hunt goes with our win and advance mentality. We backed ourselves into a corner and we have to do what we need to do to get out," explained HSU head coach
Joddie Gleason.
The HSU victory was vitally important as it evened its league mark to 10-10 with next week's final two regular season games to be played. Cal State Dominguez Hills (16-8) fell to 12-8 with its second loss of the weekend.
The special night belonged to the Jacks' seniors –
Kelly Kime,
Elle Anderson and
Jain Tuey. The three veteran teammates produced 18 of the team's 66-point output.
"What a great group of seniors. They are great leaders, big competitors and hard workers in practice every day," said Gleason. "The team wanted to win for them and to make their night memorable. I am glad we were able to accomplish it."
Kime had the biggest final Lumberjack Arena appearance. The local Eureka product downed three of four triples and four of five overall shots for 11 points.
"Kelly is a great player. She has really stepped up for us these last few weeks," added Gleason.
Kime noted, "Getting two wins is always great. I have been struggling and it feels good to get my shot back. When Elle (Anderson) found me early on, the hoop's size increased after that for me tonight."
Along with the assist to Kime, Anderson chipped in four points, two rebounds and a steal.
Tuey converted one conventional 3-point play and pulled down two boards.
"It feels great as we had a rough weekend last week. We wanted to redeem ourselves from the first time we played them," said the senior guard.
Leading HSU (12-10) in scoring,
Kersey Wilcox converted 10 of 11 free throws and four of six attempts for a team-high 18 points go with six assists and three rebounds.
Megan Shield was strong inside with 11 points, 12 rebounds and five blocked shots.
Amanda Kunst was right behind her with 10 points and seven caroms.
Dani Gaumer also chipped in nine points.
Tied at 13 with 9:17 into the game, Wilcox converted a 3-point play to give HSU a lead it would not give up the rest of the night. From that point, the Jacks finished the opening half by outscoring CSU Dominguez Hills, 19-9, for a 32-22 advantage.
The Toros were able to cut the margin down to two points twice, 36-34 and 38-36, in the first eight minutes of the second stanza.
Gaumer buried a triple and Anderson laid the ball into the bucket off a Kime assist to push the difference back to seven, 43-36. The home lead would be no less than five points in the final part of the night.
CSU Dominguez Hills received a big night from Talia Rayford, who had 22 points, 12 rebound, three assists and four steals.
HSU will start its final pair of games next Friday at rival Chico State starting at 5:30 p.m.
