HSU tries to improve results from first meetings
As was the case last weekend, HSU will try to improve upon its first meetings against both Cal State East Bay and Cal State Monterey Bay.
The Jacks split the road swing against the Pioneers and Otters. The North Coast team faced the same situation where it gained a sweep instead of a split in the rematches.
Cal State East Bay held HSU to its lowest offensive output of the 2013-14 season in the first meeting on Jan. 4. The Pioneers went out to a 32-24 first half lead, before extending it to a 61-44 final. Kersey Wilcox was the Jacks' lone double figure scorer with 10 points. The Pioneers' center Danielle Peacon posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Brianna Terrance netted a game-high 17-point evening.
On the previous night, HSU took an extra five minutes, before running away from Cal State Monterey Bay, 65-53 in overtime. Wilcox exploded for 25 points, nine rebounds and three assists to lead the charge. Dani Gaumer added 12 points and 10 boards. Jenna Bandy hit for 20 points for the Otters.
Series entering the week's action
The Jacks look to begin the week's action by snapping a four-game losing streak to the Pioneers. Cal State East Bay made it four wins in a row over HSU with its victory in Hayward. The Jacks have also dropped the past two meetings in Arcata including a 58-53 overtime loss last Feb. 16. Sarah Finley hit a 3-pointer 27 seconds into the extra period and the Otters never trailed in the extra frame.
Against Cal State Monterey Bay, HSU won for the first time in three games on Jan. 3. The Jacks, though, have won only one of the last four contests played in Lumberjack Arena coming on Feb. 4, 2012 (65-51). Last year on HSU's floor, the Otters prevailed 51-43 by outscoring the Jacks, 25-9, in the final 11 minutes of play.
Last week's highlights
Last Friday, Megan Shields was the Jacks' force with 18 points, eight rebounds, five steals and three blocks against CSU San Bernardino. Jain Tuey led a strong HSU bench effort with her career-high 16-point night to defeat UC San Diego.
Shin and Wilcox move up the HSU top 10 single season lists
Wilcox's 115 made free throws is now the seventh most for a Jacks' season, while Shin has knocked down 55 3-point attempts to tie for 8th-best with current assistant coach Lisa Petty.
