Box Score LAS VEGAS – For only the third time in just over a season, Humboldt State blasted six home runs in one game to conclude a perfect Desert Stinger Tournament.
Led by
Tonya Walker and
Sarah Fox's pairs of homers, the Lumberjacks home run barrage drove them to a 7-4 victory over the Orediggers of Colorado School of Mines on Sunday morning.
With the victory, No. 4 HSU wrapped up its first week of the 2014 season at a perfect 9-0 including sweeping of all five contest in the Las Vegas weekend.
"A great start to our season. This was a great way to get things going before conference play next week," said HSU head coach Shelli Sarchett. "It is early in the season and we still have some things to work on. This week really gave us a chance to see what we have. The challenge for us as a team will be to keep this momentum going all year long and this is more than capable of doing that."
The six Jacks home runs is the third time with six-plus round-trippers over the last 76 games since the beginning of last season. HSU has 20 home runs in its first nine games of the year.
Of the nine-team hits, HSU sent six over the fence with three coming via the leadoff variety.
Walker, who went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and two RBI, blasted two solo shots,
Fox hit her first two home runs of the year with a solo and two-run homers.
Tiffany Hollingsworth singled and homered and
Dani Randall crushed her fourth homer as the sixth Jacks four bag hit of the day.
Darian Harris singled for the final HSU hit.
Madison Williams improved to 3-0 by firing the first six innings by allowing six hits and four earned runs with four strikeouts.
Katie Obbema worked the seventh for the save with one hit and struck out one.
With two out in the top of the first, Randall connected on the first HSU home run.
The score remained 1-0 until the visiting fourth frame when Hollingsworth led off with her homer.
Walker stepped into the box and drove the ball over the right field fence to start the fifth frame.
Leading 3-1 to begin the sixth, Fox hit her first solo homer. After two outs, Walker added her second solo home run to make it 5-1.
Colorado School of Mines plated three scores in the home sixth to pull to within a run, 5-4.
HSU would allow its opponent no closer. Hollingsworth led off the seventh with a single. Two outs later, Fox put her second ball over the fence for the final two Jacks runs.
Obbema posted a scoreless bottom of the seventh to secure the 7-4 win.
HSU will have four days off before taking to the diamond in the California Collegiate Athletic Association opening pair of games at Cal State San Bernardino starting at noon on Friday.
