Box Score TURLOCK – A team cannot finish the season any stronger than Humboldt State did.
Over the past two weekends, the Lumberjacks avenged three earlier season losses and capped the year by completing the sweep of the Warriors of Cal State Stanislaus, 66-60.
Trailing by eight points at intermission, HSU rattled off the first 10 points of the latter stanza and never trailed again.
"We didn't play as well as could in the first half," stressed HSU head coach
Joddie Gleason. "The girls showed a lot of heart and competed better with more defensive intensity in the second half. We were aggressive to make plays and looked to score. We broke their press and handled their pressure in the second half and made shots."
In the end, the Jacks' fourth-straight victory to finish the season was not enough in the end. HSU (15-11) improved to 12-10 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, but wins by both Cal State Los Angeles and Cal State Dominguez Hills to both finish 13-9 ended its playoff hopes. The Jacks finish as the seventh team and last team to not qualify for the new reduced six-team field.
"Our girls showed a lot of grit and character, but as I said before we backed ourselves into a corner these last weeks," pointed out Gleason. "I couldn't be more proud of the group with the way they played, represented HSU and finished strong with four wins and three coming against regionally-ranked teams down the stretch."
Amanda Kunst and
Megan Shields guided the HSU winning effort with 14 points apiece. Kunst added a team-high eight rebounds and three assists, while Shields had six rebounds.
Seniors
Kelly Kime and
Elle Anderson produced solid final outings. Kime downed 3 triples for 11 points to go with six boards and a pair of assists. Anderson made three of five attempts for seven points and grabbed four caroms.
Dani Gaumer added eight points with two 3-pointers and four assists.
Kersey Wilcox chipped in a season-low three points, but contributed four assists, five rebounds and two steals.
The final HSU senior,
Jain Tuey made three fouls shots for three points and stole two passes.
Jae Shin and
Jessica Johnson completed the scoring with three tallies each.
Gleason stressed of her 2013-14 Jacks squad, "We have such a quality group of people that really care about each other and a true team, which is what I will remember most about this group."
Following a difficult first half, Gaumer drained a triple and Anderson laid a ball into the bucket to start the game-changing 10-0 run to begin the second 20 minutes. A Kunst hoop and Kime 3-pointer completed the spurt to complete the eight-point deficit into a two-point lead, 35-33, in the first 6:23.
Cal State Stanislaus (13-13/10-12 CCAA) tied the game two more times in the next three minutes until Shin downed her 57
th triple of the year to give HSU the lead, 43-40, it would give up the rest of the contest.
The Jacks led by as many as 10 points, 61-51, with 1:17 remaining in the night, before the Warriors cut it to six points in the final difference.
For the Warriors, Ana Burch led all scorers with 22 points.
