Box Score 2 ARCATA – A beautiful Friday afternoon gave Humboldt State its first taste of home field action. The Lumberjacks didn't waste the opportunity with a sweep of the Pioneers of Cal State East Bay.
Julie Pena's two-run single in the bottom of the fifth propelled HSU to a 3-2 opening victory. The home bats struck early with six hits and five runs in the second contest's first inning and proved to be enough to complete the sweep, 5-2.
"It was great to come out and win two games and we have to do that tomorrow," said Jacks head coach
Shelli Sarchett.
Pena made the most of her game one single and game two double to drive in half of HSU's runs on the day with four RBIs.
Dani Randall wrapped her California Collegiate Athletic Association-leading 10
th home run around the left field foul pole in the first game.
Game 1
Following three scoreless innings to open the twinbill, the Pioneers (8-16/5-13 CCAA) were the first to put tallies on the board.
With two outs in the top of the fourth, Cal State East Bay received a Jaynie MacDonald single up the middle and an Alex Vela infield hit. Both runners would advance on a passed ball, before Kelsey LaVaute lofted a ball that dropped just out of the reach of HSU (23-6/13-5 CCAA) second baseman
Tiffany Hollingsworth's reach in shallow right center field to plate both runners for a 2-0 lead.
As she did twice last weekend, Randall led off the home fourth with a solo home run to cut the difference to 2-1.
The Jacks'
Darian Harris drove the ball off the new Lumberjack Field right field fence missing a home run by less than two feet for a sliding double with one out. The Pioneers' pitcher Emily Perlich walked both
Hannah Williams and Randall to load the bases to face Pena. The HSU sophomore responded with a solid two-run single to right center for a 3-2 lead.
"Their number one is a pretty good pitcher," noted Sarchett. "It was nice to see Dani (Randall) come up with her home run. Julie (Pena) had strikeouts her first two times at bat. When the chips are down and the bases loaded, she is one of our best hitters and she came through."
HSU pitcher
Katie Obbema (11-4) would not need any more support. The second-year hurler set Cal State East Bay down in order the final two innings for the win.
Game 2
After a one-two-three top of the first, HSU went to work.
Harris and Hollingsworth drove back-to-back one out singles back up the middle.
Hannah Williams drove in the first run with a deep hit to left field. Randall walked to load the sacks.
Hollingsworth scampered home on a passed ball for the second HSU tally. Pena came through for the second time with a two-double to expand the total, before a single off
Alison McKibbon's bat completed the five-run outburst.
"We jumped off with runs from the start and scored. We have to continue and not be content and put runs up throughout the game," pointed out Sarchett.
The Pioneers answered with a pair of runs, one unearned, off a two-run single by Vela to make it 5-2.
Liz Perez (6-2) held Cal State East Bay without another hit over the next three-plus innings, before getting into sixth-inning trouble with two walks. Obbema took the ball and retired all six batters she would face to shut the door for her sixth save of the year.
Sarah Fox singled in each game for HSU.
HSU will complete the four-game weekend series against Cal State East Bay for StrikeOut Cancer Day starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
