Box Score 2 CARSON – A Southern California weekend trip could not have produced any better results. No. 6 Humboldt State recorded its most dominant California Collegiate Athletic Association weekend by completing a four-game road sweep of Cal State Dominguez Hills.
A
Julie Pena three-run fourth-inning home run gave
Katie Obbema all of run support she would need as the Lumberjacks took the opener, 5-1.
HSU made it 11 round-trippers for the four games as both
Tonya Walker and
Hannah Williams homered to help
Madison Williams post her first collegiate shutout, 8-0 in five innings, in the second contest.
"It feels good to get our first sweep," admitted HSU head coach
Shelli Sarchett. "The girls have worked hard. We did little things right this weekend and that's what we have to continue to do for the rest of the year."
The three Jacks pitchers – Obbema,
Liz Perez and
Madison Williams – combined to allow only one earned run in 14 innings of work.
The HSU offense outscored Cal State Dominguez Hills (14-21/8-16 CCAA) 13-1 on Saturday and 29-6 in the four-game set.
"We hit the ball hard and all of our pitchers threw well," added the Jacks coach. "Defensively, we made the plays when we needed them."
Game 1
It took three innings, but the HSU (28-9/18-6 CCAA) engine roared to life in its fourth trip to the plate.
Tiffany Hollingsworth lined a leadoff single.
Hannah Williams, who laid down a sacrifice bunt, reached on a Toros' fielding error.
Dani Randall laced a run-scoring double for the first run. After a ground out, Pena powered her third home run of the weekend with a three-run shot for a 4-0 visiting advantage.
After missing by a narrow margin twice last weekend,
Darian Harris connected for her first home run on a solo shot to right field to add one to the margin and 5-0 score.
With two outs in the home fifth, the Toros were given a two-out walk, before Kaci McGinnis doubled down the left field line for what would be the home team's lone score of the day, 5-1.
Obbema held the four-run lead until Perez worked the bottom of the seventh to finish the 5-1 victory.
Obbema ran her season record to 14-5 by giving up the one earned run and six hits over six frames and fanning five Toros.
Walker had two hits along with a double from each of Randall and
Sarah Fox.
Game 2
HSU lit the runs column to begin the late game from the start.
Walker reached on an error, Hollingsworth singled and
Hannah Williams walked to load the bases with one out. Randall was hit by a pitch and Fox walked for back-to-back RBIs without hitting the ball and a 2-0 early lead.
With one out in the second, Walker drove her seventh home run of the year to left field. Harris reached on a CSU Dominguez Hills center fielder error and would score right away on a run-scoring double off of Hollingsworth's bat to double the lead to 4-0.
HSU would double the difference again in the fourth frame.
Walker drew a leadoff walk, stole second and moved to third on a Harris sacrifice. Hollingsworth drove her in on a single.
Hannah Williams followed by blasting a two-run homer to left field. Randall singled through the left side and would eventually score on a wild pitch for a Jacks' 8-0 lead.
Madison Williams finished the strong HSU weekend series by giving up two hits over the final two Toros at bats to complete her first shutout, 8-0 in five innings.
In the game,
Madison Williams scattered seven hits and walked one with two strikeouts over five scoreless innings.
Hollingsworth posted a 3-for-3 game with two runs, a double and two RBIs. She extended her hitting streak to 13 games and her season average to .421.
Along with their homers, Walker scored three times and
Hannah Williams added a single.
Carly Perkins recorded her first collegiate hit with a single.
The No. 6-rated Jacks will now head into their week off on a four-game winning streak.
HSU will have two weeks off, before playing its first game of the Tournament of Champions in Turlock, Calif. on April 4 against Simon Fraser at 9 a.m.
