No. 9 Jacks net sweep of Seawolves behind big scoring frames

Sarah Fox belted a opening grand slam home run
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Softball teams are always looking for multi-run at bats. Humboldt State produced a pair of these offensive trips in each game to help sweep host Sonoma State Friday afternoon.

The Lumberjacks' Sarah Fox broke open the first contest on a fifth-inning grand slam in a 7-2 victory. HSU plated two scores in each of the final two innings off a two-run hard single by Tiffany Hollingsworth and a Julie Pena two-run homer to take away a 4-1 win over Sonoma State in the late contest.

"It was two good games today. In the first game, we were lifted on a Fox grand slam in the fifth. Game two was a real defensive battle until a big hit with two outs and two on in the six by Hollingsworth," said HSU head coach Shelli Sarchett. "Both games were well-played. We really did hit when we needed to hit."

The Jacks (36-10/20-6 California Collegiate Athletic Association) sweep made it three-straight wins against the Seawolves (30-14/14-12 CCAA) in the last six days beginning with the Tournament of Champions title game last Sunday.

HSU has now claimed victories in 12 of its last 13 games.

Dani Randall led the visiting bats with three singles to extend her hitting streak to 17 games.

Game 1: HSU 7, Sonoma State 2

As was the case last Sunday, HSU wasted no time in putting runs on the scoreboard.

In the top of the first inning, Tonya Walker started the game by singling up the middle and moved to second on a Darian Harris sacrifice. Tiffany Hollingsworth lined her own hit up the middle of the infield to score Walker for the first run. Hannah Williams laced a run-scoring double down the right field line for the second tally. With two outs, Sarah Fox's grounder to second resulted in an error to allow Williams to touch home plate for a 3-0 HSU advantage.

The Seawolves' leadoff hitter Alison Strycula manufactured her own run. She singled through the left side, before stealing both second and third bases. After two outs, Keisi Chinen singled to score Strycula to make it 3-1 after one inning of play.

Following three scoreless frames, HSU had its second big inning. The first three visiting hitters reached base – Walker on a free pass, Harris on a single and Hollingsworth on an error. The Seawolves retired the next two Jacks, but not three in a row. Fox stepped in and blasted a grand slam round-tripper over the right field fence to break open the contest, 7-1.

Strycula tripled home Holli Brown, but Sonoma State could get no more runs in the bottom of the seventh for the 7-2 final.

Along with Fox's grand slam, Hannah Williams doubled twice, while Katelyn Graeser had her first hit of the year on a pinch hit.

Katie Obbema ran her season mark to 17-6 by allowing only four hits and one earned run with five strikeouts over five innings of work. Madison Williams covered the final two frames.

"Good pitching by Obbema and Williams in the first game kept us in it," noted Sarchett.

Game 2: HSU 4, Sonoma State 1

In a rematch of the Tournament of Champions starting pitchers, HSU's Liz Perez and Sonoma State's Katy Bihl tossed five scoreless innings apiece to open the game.

Bihl fell one out short of making it six consecutive innings without allowing a run. With two outs, Walker reached on a fielder's choice and Harris singled for runners at the corners. Harris swiped second base, before Hollingsworth smashed a hard liner down the left field line to score both runners and a Jacks 2-0 lead.

Perez's 24-inning streak without an earned run ended in short order to start the home sixth. The Seawolves' Megan Konieczka blasted her 14th homer to left field to cut the margin in half, 2-1.

In the top of the seventh, Randall started off with a leadoff single. Two hitters later, Pena drove the offering over the right field fence for a two-run homer, her second off Sonoma State's Bihl in two games, for the HSU 4-1 advantage.

Perez held tough in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs and runners on first and second, the sophomore struck out and enticed a foul out to right field for the final two outs to end the game.

"Perez pitched game two and was stellar," pointed out the HSU coach.

Perez (11-4) gave up seven hits, one earned run and one walk, while fanning eight Seawolves over seven innings. She has allowed only two earned runs over her last 38 innings of work for a 0.37 ERA.

Randall and Andrea Chavez both singled two times.

The two CCAA rivals will complete their four-game set with another twinbill starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday morning.
