Harris lofts single in 13th to give HSU ‘Senior Day’ and series sweep of UCSD

Jacks storm Darian Harris after her 13th-inning game-winning hit
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ARCATA, Calif. – In the longest game played at Lumberjack Field, Darian Harris' single just over the No. 15 UC San Diego shortstop's outstretched glove scored Alison McKibbon to give No. 8 Humboldt State a 6-5 victory in 13 innings, after a 2-0 opening shutout for a 'Senior Day' and four-game series sweep.

The Lumberjacks received a five-hit shutout by Katie Obbema in the first game, before being the winning pitcher of record in the late game. The sophomore (20-7) registered 12 scoreless frames and allowed only eight hits to post her second 20-win season in two years.

After six innings without a score, left-hand hitting Harris drove a ball over the visiting shortstop to allow McKibbon, who doubled to lead off the home 13th, to trot home with the clinching score.

"I can't ask for anything more from these girls. They fought hard and never gave up," said HSU head coach Shelli Sarchett. "I am so proud of these guys and these seniors."

The Jacks three seniors – Andrea Chavez, Sarah Fox and Tonya Walker – will always be able to enjoy a four-game sweep of their final home weekend.

With the four wins, HSU (41-11) posted its second 40-plus win season in a row following a 53-14 mark a year ago. The Jacks have now won 13 of their last 15. HSU improved to 25-7 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and recorded its second series sweep. UC San Diego (30-13) fell to 19-9 in the conference.

Julie Pena was not retired in the seven-plus hour twinbill. The third baseman was 2-for-2 with a double and single to go with eight walks. She also drew a bases loaded walk in both games.

Tiffany Hollingsworth tied the HSU single season doubles record set by Apple Gomez in 1995 with one in each game for a season total of 21.

Game 2: HSU 6, UCSD 5 – 13 innings

It may have taken four hours and 26 minutes, but HSU pulled out the victory in a contest where a combined 38 runners were left on base including 21 Jacks.

The Tritons scratched out single runs in the first and second to open a 2-0 lead.

In the home third, Walker and Harris led off with singles, before Pena drew a bases loaded free pass to bring in the first score and make it 2-1.

Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth, Chavez singled home Pena, who walked, before Walker hit a sac fly to left to tied the game, 3-3.

For the fourth time, UC San Diego scored one time with a run in the sixth. HSU answered with Hollingsworth hitting a solid double to lead off the home sixth and scored when Dani Randall followed by belting a two-run home run long over the center field fence to put the Jacks ahead, 5-4.

With two outs, Kirsten Willmon doubled and scored on an Amani Proctor single which snuck past HSU shortstop Cyndi Chavez to deadlock the contest, 5-5.

Six innings passed without another run to break the tie. Over those frames, UC San Diego left four runners on base in six trips to the plate, while HSU had seven in five at bats.

In the bottom of the 13th inning, McKibbon drilled a double to left center field. Andrea Chavez sacrificed her to third on a bunt. After the second out, Harris hit a 1-1 pitch over the Tritons' shortstop for the game-winner, 6-5.

"It was see how everyone played in the game. With such a long game, we had to play a lot of people and they all were part of this win," said the HSU coach. "Maddie (Williams) came in in a big (pitching) situation. She pitched well and was a real 'bulldog' out there and Katie (Obbema) to finish the game was great."

Along with her double to lead off the 13th, McKibbon added two singles in the game. Walker also doubled and singled.

Williams came on in the middle of the fifth to log three and a third innings in relief of starter Liz Perez. Obbema covered the final five innings of three-hit work.

Game 1: HSU 2, UCSD 0

With no score in the bottom of the third, HSU gave all the runs Obbema would need in the circle.

Andrea Chavez singled up the middle to start the at bat and moved to second on a Walker sac bunt, before Harris singled to move her to third base. Hollingsworth laid down a well-played suicide squeeze bunt to score a sliding Andrea Chavez. Three batters later, Pena watched ball four to bring home Hollingsworth and give HSU a 2-0 advantage.

Obbema allowed only two hits over the final four innings to record her second shutout of the year, 2-0.

HSU will complete its regular season on the road next weekend. The Jacks will travel to Turlock for a four-game series against the Warriors of Cal State Stanislaus beginning on Friday at 1 p.m.
