Box Score 2 TURLOCK, Calif. – In a series starting a day late, No. 6 Humboldt State's
Katie Obbema was on the mark with her second-straight shutout to highlight a Saturday softball sweep of host Cal State Stanislaus.
The Lumberjacks started the opener with three runs in the top of the first and Obbema took over from there for the 3-0 blanking of the Warriors. In the late contest,
Alison McKibbon's two-run second-inning double was part of a four-run at bat, which propelled HSU to an eventual 7-2 victory.
"We were able to get everybody in the ball game in some way or another," said HSU Head Coach
Shelli Sarchett. "Our pitching staff did a nice job today. We had some clutch hits all throughout the lineup today, especially from the bottom (part of the order). It was really a team effort."
With the two victories, HSU (43-11) runs its win streak to seven games. The Jacks also improved to 27-7 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and clinched the No. 2 seed in next weekend's conference playoffs.
In the circle, Obbema (21-7) recorded her third shutout of the year and second in a row after a 2-0 game three win over UC San Diego last Saturday. The sophomore has not allowed an earned run in her last three-plus appearances covering 22 innings of work.
Darian Harris paced the HSU bats with a 4-for-6 day and scored two runs. McKibbon added a double and a pair of singles, while
Tiffany Hollingsworth singled three times.
Game 1: HSU 3, Cal State Stanislaus 0 HSU scored all it would need in its first trip to the plate. Leadoff hitter
Tonya Walker was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored after back-to-back singles from Harris and Hollingsworth for the first run.
Julie Pena lofted a sacrifice fly and
Dani Randall, who walked, ran home on a wild pitch for a 3-0 Jacks' advantage.
Obbema gave up two hits in the third and one in the seventh to the Cal State Stanislaus (15-38/8-26 CCAA) hitters. She walked one and struck out six in her three-hit outing.
Game 2: HSU 7, Cal State Stanislaus 2 The Jacks offense waited an extra inning to get runs on the board in the second contest. After a
Sarah Fox leadoff single, McKibbon laced a two-run double to left center field three batters later to make it 3-0 visiting lead.
Andrea Chavez followed with a hit to bring home McKibbon for a 4-0 HSU score.
Leading 4-1 in the fifth inning, a Pena single and a
Hannah Williams sac fly added two more HSU runs. Walker doubled home pinch-hitter
Cyndi Chavez in the sixth to make it a 6-1 margin for HSU.
Liz Perez (14-4) covered the first six innings, before
Madison Williams logged the final frame in the 7-2 Jacks win. Perez fanned seven Warriors and Williams retired two of her three outs by strikeout.
Andrea Chavez lined two singles, while
Hailee Watilo had her first collegiate hit as a seventh-inning pinch hitter.
"We have to keep our intensity up and come in tomorrow and take another two (games). We are working on all cylinders right now and we have to keep this momentum going," said the Jacks director.
HSU will have its last regular season doubleheader on Sunday starting at 11 a.m. to complete the four-game series at Cal State Stanislaus.
