HSU drops pair to Cal St. Stanislaus in season finale

Tiffany Hollingsworth lined 5 singles on Sunday
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TURLOCK, Calif. – On Sunday, Humboldt State ended the softball regular season by dropping both ends of the doubleheader to the Warriors of Cal State Stanislaus.

After not taking advantage of ideal scoring opportunities in its previous two at bats, HSU saw Cal State Stanislaus' Amy Droege line a two-run fifth-inning double for the game-winning scores in a 3-1 opener. The Warriors made it a clean doubleheader sweep as they held off a seventh-inning Jacks' rally for a 4-3 late game victory.

"It was frustrating. What we have to do is move past this (weekend) and go into the CCAA's (California Collegiate Athletic Association) and (NCAA) Regionals strong," said HSU Head Coach Shelli Sarchett.

The two HSU losses snapped its seven-game win streak and was only the second time it was swept in a twinbill this season.

Despite the season finale results, the Jacks had already clinched the No. 2 seed of next weekend's CCAA Softball Championship held at Arnaiz Stadium in Stockton, Calif. HSU will face No. 3 UC San Diego in a Friday, May 2 game starting at approximately 7 p.m. No. 1 seed Cal State Monterey Bay faces No. 4 Sonoma State in the opener at 4:30 p.m.

At the plate, HSU pounded 19 hits in the two games, but only Julie Pena recorded an extra base hit with a double in each contest. Pena finished the day 4-for-7, while Tiffany Hollingsworth produced five singles and Sarah Fox added had four hits.

Game 1: Cal State Stanislaus 3, HSU 1

In the top of the first, HSU (43-13/27-9 CCAA) put the first tally of the day on the scoreboard, but could not add to it. Leading off, Tonya Walker was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a Hollingsworth single to center field for a Jacks 1-0 lead. The Warriors (17-38/10-26 CCAA), though, would tie the game, 1-1, with a run in the home half of the first frame.

HSU missed two big opportunities to retake the advantage. Fox and Pena singled to start the fourth frame and advanced to second and third on a wild pitch only to have their next three teammates retired. HSU also loaded the bases with two outs in the fifth, before the ended on a fly out. Droege laced her double in the home fifth for the game-deciding tallies.

Game 2: Cal State Stanislaus 4, HSU 3

The Warriors had the two-out magic going in the second game. The home club scored all four of its runs over three separate innings with two outs.

Trailing 2-0 in the top of the third, Hollingsworth drove home Walker, who walked, for the second time on the day to cut the deficit in half, 2-1. Cal State Stanislaus answered back with single scores in the third and fifth innings to open a 4-1 lead.

In the top of the sixth, HSU loaded the bases with one out after singles by Fox, Alison McKibbon and Cyndi Chavez. A Walker sacrifice fly scored Fox for the lone HSU run to make it a 4-2 difference.

An inning later with one out, Pena doubled and Dani Randall singled. Fox lined a single through the right side of the infield to drive home Pena, but the Warriors called upon the opening game's winning pitcher, Karina Collazo, to retire the next two Jacks hitters for a 4-3 final.
