Three HSU All-CCAA players provide punch to defeat UC San Diego

Katie Obbema allowed just three hits and one unearned run vs. UCSD
Box Score STOCKTON, Calif. – After waiting two hours to take the diamond, Humboldt State's All-California Collegiate Athletic Association trio of players – Tiffany Hollingsworth, Dani Randall and Katie Obbema – provided the punch and pitching to get past UC San Diego, 2-1, in the CCAA Softball Championship opening day held at Arnaiz Stadium.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the third, Hollingsworth ripped a run-scoring double off the right field wall and Randall added a RBI single two batters later to pull ahead, 2-1. Obbema did not need any more HSU run support as she gave up only two hits in the final four frames for the victory.

The Lumberjacks' win, their 11th-straight and fifth in a row this season over the Tritons, propels them into Saturday's winners bracket contest against Sonoma State at 2 p.m. The fourth-seeded Seawolves (36-19) outlasted top seed Otters of Cal State Monterey Bay, 4-2 in 14 innings, in the day's first game.

"You're in the championship round. This is the best of the best. We have to continue to score more than they do," said Jacks Head Coach Shelli Sarchett. "We saw Sonoma State earlier in the year. They're a tough team. They did just finish a 14-inning game. We expect a lot of what we saw in Sonoma and look to take advantage of their pitchers."

Hollingsworth's third-inning double not only tied the game for HSU, but gave the first-year player the program's single season doubles record of 22. The CCAA's Freshman of the Year added the HSU's first-inning hit and was the lone Jacks (44-13) multi-hit player.

"Tiff is clutch. She's a ball player. I rely a lot on her and the work she has done (this season) has really paid off," said Sarchett.

The All-CCAA second team member Randall, Sarah Fox and Alison McKibbon produced the team's other three singles.

Obbema, an All-CCAA second team pick, ran her unearned run streak to 31.1 innings and improved her season record to 22-7. The sophomore allowed only three hits and walked one, while fanning five Tritons (33-15) hitters.

UC San Diego (33-15) will face Cal State Monterey Bay (44-8) at 4:30 p.m. in a loser's bracket matchup. The Sonoma State/HSU loser and UC San Diego/Cal State Monterey Bay winner will play in the third Saturday game starting at 7 p.m.
