Box Score 2 STOCKTON, Calif. – In one of the most competitive fields of the eight-year event, Humboldt State's Williams sisters guided their team to a repeat California Collegiate Athletic Association Softball Championship Tournament title. Tournament Most Outstanding Player
Hannah Williams provided the hitting with two home runs, while sister
Madison Williams carried the pitching load to defeat rival Sonoma State, 8-6, in the championship contest.
The Lumberjacks victory gives the program two CCAA Tournament titles in a row and the third championship in the eight-year history of the tournament, the most of any league team.
Julie Pena,
Tiffany Hollingsworth and
Dani Randall joined the Williams sisters on the CCAA All-Tournament team.
The Seawolves pushed the Jacks (46-14) to the limit. Sonoma State (38-21) forced the 'if necessary' game by hitting two home runs to go ahead 5-0 after four innings and never gave up the lead in a 6-3 win of Sunday's first game.
"It feels great (to win the title). We have a great bunch of ladies," said HSU Head Coach
Shelli Sarchett. "You gotta love them (the Williams sisters). Maddie hasn't been starting, but she has been tough. She is just a 'bulldog' out there and it is really great to see her do what she did. Hannah really broke out this weekend and she needed that. I continued to tell her she has to keep swinging and when we needed her she came through."
After winning HSU's Saturday contest on a two-run eighth-inning homer,
Hannah Williams continued where she left off in the title-deciding game. The junior designated player powered her team in front 2-0 in the second, before tying the contest, 5-5, with a leadoff round-tripper in the home fourth.
In the family duo effort,
Madison Williams came on in relief for both contests. Following 3.1 innings without allowing an earned run to finish the first game, Madison proved to be even better in the late contest. Taking the ball with one out in the top of the fourth, the freshman allowed only five hits and one earned run, and recorded three strikeouts in the final 4.2 innings of the title game. Over eight innings in the two outings, the pitcher gave up seven hits, one earned run and fanned eight Sonoma State hitters.
"It's emotional. I am so happy for her (Madison) and so proud of her," said older sister Hannah. "She was moving the ball well all day. The fact we were playing Sonoma State for the eighth time and they had seen both Katie (Obbema) and Liz (Perez) a lot, it is nice to have the third pitcher come in and dominate like Maddie did."
"It was crazy," said Madison. "I knew I had to come in and be there for my team as they deserved to win the tournament. I wanted to win for them and our seniors."
In the home second, HSU struck first when
Hannah Williams drilled her first homer for a 2-0 Jacks lead.
The HSU lead did not last long as Sonoma State answered in a big way. In the top of the third, the Seawolves pushed home five runs on four hits behind back-to-back home runs from Megan Konieczka, a two-run shot, and Amanda Rossetta to pull ahead 5-2.
The Jacks cut the margin to one run, 5-4, in the bottom of the third on two unearned runs off a Sonoma State error and a two-out Randall RBI single. In the next HSU at bat in the home fourth,
Hannah Williams led off by belting her second home run to tie the game, 5-5.
HSU plated what would be the winning runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Hollingsworth launched her own homer on the first pitch of her at bat for the lead, 6-5. After a Sonoma State error, Randall blasted the fourth HSU home run in four innings, a two-run shot, for an 8-5 advantage.
With one run in and two runners on base in the top of the seventh,
Madison Williams completed her work in the circle with a fly out to left field to end the game and give the Jacks the repeat title.
Andrea Chavez lined two singles as the fourth HSU multi-hit player.
Championship Game 1 – Sonoma State 6, HSU 3 HSU tried a variety of ways to put late runs on the scoreboard, but fell short in the first Championship game.
Trailing 5-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Jacks loaded the bases with one out as
Darian Harris doubled, Hollingsworth singled and Pena walked. After the second out was retired,
Sarah Fox drew a walk to score Harris with the first run.
Hannah Williams followed by being hit by the first pitch she saw for her team's second tally. McKibbon struck out swinging on a wild pitch, which ran past the Sonoma State catcher to allow Pena to run home and cut the difference to 5-3. The Seawolves brought back starting pitcher Katy Bihl and she made Chavez ground out to end the at bat.
With one out, Sonoma State's Ancia Purdy doubled to center field and scored two batters later on a HSU throwing error for a seventh-inning insurance run and 6-3 score. Bihl set HSU down in order in the home seventh to force the second contest.
Sonoma State out hit HSU six to four. The Jacks did not get their first hit until a one-out single by Pena in the fourth inning.
HSU will now move on to the NCAA Division II West Regional national playoffs next weekend. The Jacks will find out their sub-regional assignment on Monday morning at approximately 7 a.m.
