For the remainder of the summer the Humboldt State athletic department will countdown its Top 10 of 2014. The Top 10 will feature outstanding accomplishments, memorable moments and historic events during the 2013-14 Lumberjack athletic season.Â
When Kersey Wilcox joined the Humboldt State women's basketball team for the 2013-14 season, Head Coach
Joddie Gleason anticipated a player that would make an immediate impact on the squad. Wilcox delivered in her first season in the green and gold and was named the California Collegiate Athletic Association's Newcomer of the Year.
Â
"We expected her to come in, take over the team and be our starting point guard," said Gleason. "She was very accomplished at Lane (Community College), and she was the type of player we needed."
Â
Wilcox was the Lumberjacks' top scorer in 15 of their 26 games and helped the team to a 15-11 overall record. She paced HSU in scoring (15.6 points per game) and ranked third in the CCAA. The point guard led the Jacks in free throw percentage (.895), free throws made (154) and 3-point percentage (.426). Wilcox also dished out a team-high 129 assists (5.0 per game).
Â
"We didn't know exactly what type of accolades she would get, but we were lucky enough to sign her here," said Gleason. "She is just one of those kids who does everything you ask. She is a workhorse who is never satisfied with how she plays. She is one of those players who gets into the record books without even trying."
Â
The Prineville, Ore., native also broke a team record that stood for more than 20 years in her first season at HSU. Her 154 made free throws topped Hall of Famer Dawn Miner's single-season record of 152 that was set in the 1992-93 season.Â
Wilcox's 129 assists in 2013-14 ranks eighth all time in single-season assist totals.
