Braxton Griffin rocketed the game-winning goal off a deflected save to take Humboldt State men's soccer past Saint Martin's, 4-2, Friday afternoon at Chico State's University Soccer Stadium.
After the Saints (0-3) tied the game, 2-2, three minutes into the second half, Griffin found the back of the net off a deflected shot by
Luke Bunjovac at 65:46. Only a minute later, HSU (2-1) freshmen teamed up for an insurance goal as
Alan Castillo headed a pass from
Johan Muliadi for the fourth and final score.
"The weather was very hot today in Chico and it made for a difficult playing conditions. Our guys fought through it well, though, and we are happy to get a positive result from the game," said HSU Head Coach
Fred Jungemann. "We knew that Saint Martin's were going to be fired up to perform well today after a couple difficult games last weekend and they certainly fought hard today."
Sam Wahl blasted a shot, which was saved by the Saint Martin's goalie only to have
Chuck Pitts volley the deflection into the net for the game's first score at 8:34.
Saint Martin's tied the contest seven seconds into the 21
st minute, but it did not last long. Eight minutes later,
Quintin Aguilar bodied home
Connor Wilkinson's free kick to put HSU (2-1) back in front, 2-1.
The Jacks doubled the Saints in both shots, 15-7, and goals.

Javier Torres recorded one save in net.
"It was a good result for us today and we will now focus on preparing for Sunday's match against Academy of Art," said Jungemann.
The HSU-Academy of Art match will be back in Chico Sunday at 4 p.m.
