Griffin Hits Overtime Goal for Jacks Victory over Pioneers

Match Highlights

HAYWARD, Calif. – For the second match in a row, the Humboldt State men went to bonus soccer. Braxton Griffin made sure this time the match ended in the Lumberjacks' favor with the night's lone goal less than three minutes in to the first overtime for a 1-0 victory at Cal State East Bay Friday night.

On an Andre Bernal pass, Griffin kept the ball inbounds on the end line near the right post of the Pioneers' goal and blasted the game-winner from point blank range for the Lumberjack win at 92:53.

"This was a great win for our guys tonight. We got off to a shaky start in the first half, but really turned things around in the second half," said HSU Head Coach Fred Jungemann.

The HSU (5-1-1) win gave the program its first California Collegiate Athletic Association opening victory since 2006, its first year in the league.

"East Bay played very well tonight too, and the game could have gone either way. It was a great game for the fans," said the HSU coach.

Along with a scoreless tie on the scoreboard, the shots could not have been closer. The Pioneers (3-3-1/0-1 CCAA) held a one-shot advantage, 16-15, through the first 90 minutes.

With plenty of stadium support reigning down, Griffin took the lone overtime shot and made it count with the game-winning goal.

"We had an awesome group of HSU fans at the game tonight and their support was amazing, it almost felt like a home game," said Jungemann.

The Griffin goal was his team-leading fifth on the season, while Bernal posted his first assist and point of the year.

Jacks' goalie Javier Torres stopped the only two Pioneer shots on goal for his second shutout of the season.

HSU will complete its weekend road swing with a 2 p.m. Sunday match at Sonoma State.
