Box Score ROCKLIN, Calif. –
Braxton Griffin and
Alan Castillo each netted a pair of goals to power Humboldt State to a 4-0 men's soccer victory at William Jessup in a hot Saturday afternoon match.
The two Lumberjack forwards helped the team bounce back from a tough Thursday night, 1-0, defeat to Seattle Pacific.
"Today's game was a good response from the team after the frustration of Thursday. We got a strong performance from our defense and scored several nice goals," said HSU Head Coach
Fred Jungemann.
The HSU defense allowed only a single shot on goal, which was stopped by goalie
Javier Torres. The Jacks (1-1) outshot the Warriors (0-1) by a 10-8 margin.
After a
Luke Bunjovac corner kick, Griffin put the first of his two scores into the net at 6:33 into the match. In a little over 25 minutes later, freshman Castillo celebrated his first collegiate goal off a pass by
Chuck Pitts to make it 2-0 at 34:04.
In the second half,
Riki Michael assisted on Griffin's second goal to make it 3-0 in the 73
rd minute of play. Castillo added an unassisted tally to complete the scoring with less than five minutes in the match for the 4-0 final.
"It was great to see
Braxton Griffin get his first two goals of the year and freshman
Alan Castillo stepped up with a great performance and two goals to kick start his HSU career," said Jungemann. "Today's game was a good overall team performance and will definitely help build confidence moving forward."
HSU will be off until next Friday when it heads back to Chico for a pair of games starting with a 4:30 p.m. match against Saint Martin's.
