TURLOCK, Calif. – Humboldt State used a 25-4 first-half run to turn the tide and coast past Cal State Stanislaus, 85-71, in women's basketball Saturday night.
Down 15-10 six minutes into the game, the Lumberjacks scored the next 16 points off four 3-pointers. The HSU run continued to 25-4 and finished with a 35-19 advantage. The Jacks led by as many as 30 points, 60-30, before they eased to the 14-point win over the Warriors.
"It was probably one of our best halves of basketball. We executed, made the right reads and broke the press. All things were clicking for us," said HSU Head Coach
Joddie Gleason.
With the win, HSU (12-1) extends its winning streak to 11 games, the longest run under Gleason in her 11 years directing the team. The Jacks also stay an undefeated 8-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and have now won their last 12 league contests. Cal State Stanislaus (3-9) falls to HSU for the eighth game in a row and drops to 1-6 in the CCAA.
For the second night in a row, the HSU offense hit over half of its shots (31-for-61) at a 50.8 percent clip. The Jacks downed 12 treys in 29 tries. The visitors handed out 22 assists to 19 turnovers and outrebounded the Warriors, 34-26.
HSU finished the night with eight players with at least eight points apiece in another balanced offensive attack.
"We were pretty balanced scoring again. We spread out the offense and
Kersey Wilcox recognized who was open and she did a great job of distributing the ball," said Gleason.
Kersey Wilcox had another all-around night. After setting her personal-best 12 assists at Chico State Friday, she had seven assists against Cal State Stanislaus. Wilcox made 2-of-4 3-point tries and all six foul shots for 12 points and added four rebounds.
"We knew we were a little sluggish and tired going into tonight. We wanted to get our energy up and have a good start," said Wilcox. "It is always hard to go 2-0 in this conference. It is the best feeling for us to trust each other to make good shots and passes. We count on each other so much and pick one another up."
Senior Dani Gaumer paced the HSU scoring for the second night in a row. The guard downed 5-of-7 treys and 6-of-10 shots overall for 17 points. She grabbed five rebounds and had an assist.
Megan Shields and
A'Jaee Foster both had solid inside outings. Shields made 6-of-7 shots, including a 3-pointer for 14 points. The center pulled down five rebounds and had an assist.
Foster chipped in 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting. The forward missed her fifth double-double by two rebounds as she had a team-high eight. Foster handed out a season-best six assists and blocked a pair of shots.
Jae Shin hit a pair of 3-pointers for eight points and dished four assists.
Off the bench,
Amanda Kunst netted nine points with a 3-pointer and had three rebounds.
Nyaa Davis contributed six points and two assists.
Cal State Stanislaus' Cassidy Curry-Sanders and Briana Cotton guided the home effort with 18 and 17 points, respectively.
The Warriors started the night with the upper hand. The home team enjoyed a 13-7 lead with 15:24 on a Riley Holladay layup.
Cal State Stanislaus continued to lead, 15-10, on an Ana Burch bucket at 13:40. The Burch basket turned out to be the last one for the next 4:22. In those four-plus minutes, HSU put 16 unanswered points on the scoreboard for a 26-15 lead and never looked back the rest of the night.
HSU returns home for a pair of CCAA contests next week. The North Coast team hosts Cal State East Bay Thursday and Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday. Both games start at 5:30 p.m.
