Broncos Outlast Men’s Basketball in Double Overtime

POMONA, Calif. -- Cal Poly Pomona outlasted the Humboldt State men's basketball team in a double-overtime showdown, 81-79, Friday at Kellogg Gym.

"This was a classic (California Collegiate Athletic Association) matchup of Broncos and Lumberjacks," said Head Coach Steve Kinder. "Most games we play against these guys come down to the closing minutes."

The Jacks (11-6, 5-6 CCAA) led by seven, 70-63, with 16 seconds remaining in regulation, but the Broncos (12-4, 8-3 CCAA) scored seven-straight points to send the game into overtime. Cal Poly Pomona's Jordan Faison sank the 3-point basket, which forced extra time in Friday night's game.

"They put stops together against us and it was very difficult to get open looks (at the end of regulation)," said Kinder. "They put on a full-court press and were fouling. It made it very difficult to get the ball down the court."

Allan Guei converted a pair of free throw buckets with 1:13 left in the first overtime to push the game into its second overtime period. Guei finished the game with 23 points and was 6-for-18 shooting.

HSU found success outside the arc against Cal Poly Pomona's zone defense. Austin Bryan knocked down a season-best eight 3-pointers and was 8-for-11 from long distance. Bryan led all Green and Gold scorers with 28 points, two points shy of his season-best total.

Terrence Drisdom and Faison scored all four Bronco points in double overtime. Faison was their top scorer with 21 points and pulled down 12 rebounds.

Cal Poly Pomona connected on 43 percent of its shots Friday and shot 56 percent from the charity stripe. HSU was outrebounded 46-44 and committed 21 turnovers.

Malik Morgan tallied nine assists and nine rebounds in the HSU loss. Calvin Young II led the Jacks with three steals.

The Green and Gold travel to La Jolla, Calif., to take on UC San Diego Saturday. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

"Our focus right now is to get rest and getting food. We need to come back ready to play (Saturday)," said Kinder. "UC San Diego has split against Cal Poly Pomona and is obviously one of the CCAA's top teams."
