POMONA, Calif. – And it's over. The defending California Collegiate Athletic Association champion Cal Poly Pomona defeated Humboldt State women's basketball and snapped its 13-game win streak, 85-52, Friday night.
The Lumberjacks' Dani Gaumer drained a 3-pointer 11 seconds into the contest and
Kersey Wilcox beat the shot clock with a trey four minutes later for the only two leads, 3-0 and 6-5, in the opening five minutes. After
Neika Puryear and
Amanda Kunst hit back-to-back buckets to tie the game at 10, the Broncos netted the next eight points and never let the Jacks closer than five points over the final 29 minutes.
"We were outplayed by a good team. They beat us at every category," said HSU Head Coach
Joddie Gleason.
The Jacks dropped to 14-2 overall and their loss ended the program-tying 13-game winning streak. HSU also saw its 14-game CCAA win streak halted. The Jacks had not lost a league game since last Feb. 15, 2014 at Sonoma State, 56-55. Cal Poly Pomona improves to 11-4 on the year and pulls to within a game of HSU at 9-2 in league action.
HSU's tough shooting night was a big reason for its first loss since Nov. 15. The Jacks hit 7-of-36 first-half shots and finished 19-for-73 for the game, a season-low 26 percent. HSU also connected on only 5-of-27 3-point attempts.
"There was a lid on the basket in our end both halves," said Gleason. "Against a good team like Cal Poly Pomona, when you are not scoring inside, you have to score outside. We didn't do either tonight."
Off the bench,
Neika Puryear was HSU's lone double figure scorer with 10 points.
The HSU starting five produced half their points average. The group made 7-of-33 shots for 23 points, half of its 46.2-point average.
Gaumer downed a trio of 3-pointers for nine points and grabbed five rebounds.
A'Jaee Foster pulled down 14 rebounds, but scored only six points. She added a team-high three assists.
Wilcox added six points, three rebounds and a pair of assists.
Sumayyah Wiggins contributed her best game of the season with seven points and seven rebounds.
Amanda Kunst chipped in five points.
Cal Poly Pomona's Ariel Marsh led all scorers with 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting. Mary Williams had a double-double off the bench of 14 points and 10 rebounds.
HSU tries to start another win streak Saturday night. The Jacks play in La Jolla, Calif., at the Tritons of UC San Diego starting at 5:30 p.m.
"We have to get over tonight quickly and bounce back tomorrow. We will see how tough we are," said Gleason.
