CHICO, Calif. -- With 0.1 seconds on the clock and the Lumberjacks trailing by a point, senior
Allan Guei drilled a pull-up jumper to lead the Humboldt State men's basketball team past archrival Chico State 74-73 in overtime Friday night.
Â
In a game that will go down as one of the best in the storied history between the two programs, the Lumberjacks weathered the punches and delivered the knockout against the Wildcats. The win extends HSU's winning streak to six games and runs the team's record to 9-4 overall and 3-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Â
"This was one of the fiercest battles between these two programs," said Head Coach
Steve Kinder. "We have had some epic battles over the years and I think (former Head Coach) Tom Wood would have been proud of this team's performance tonight."
Â
HSU carried a 32-29 lead into halftime behind a team-best 14 first-half points from freshman
Malik Morgan. Morgan had a season-best performance Friday and finished the game with 22 points on 8-for-11 shooting. He sank a 3-pointer with 1:43 in the half that gave the Green and Gold a 26-25 lead and they carried the advantage into the locker room.
Â
"Malik sent shockwaves that reached everyone in the conference tonight," said Kinder. "People are beginning to take notice of his talent and overall production. He is the kind of player you can't really key on as a guard. He makes split decisions so fast and I look forward to the next three years with the young man."
Â
The Jacks maintained the lead for much of the second half, but a Wildcat jumper from Tanner Giddings with 1:10 remaining in regulation knotted the game at 59-59 and forced overtime.
Â
Overtime featured four ties and the game looked like it was going to slip away from the Jacks in the final 11 seconds. After a
Rakim Brown miss,
Austin Bryan was called for a foul, which sent Chico State's Robert Duncan to the line to shoot a pair. Duncan missed the first and connected on the second, and gave the Wildcats a 73-72 edge before the Guei dagger.
Â
"During the game Allan was somewhat quiet, as far as of taking over the game," said Kinder. "I felt like he would step up and make some kind of a play down the stretch in regulation or overtime. I didn't think he could pull it off with that amount of time left, but he did."
Â
Guei was one of four Jacks that reached double-digit scoring totals. Morgan (22), Guei (17),
Austin Bryan (14) and
Calvin Young II (10) each scored 10 or more points against the Wildcats.
Â
The Green and Gold connected on 44.6 percent of their shots from the field in the win and were 7-for-8 shooting in overtime. HSU was 4-for-16 from outside the arc (25 percent) in the win.
Â
HSU travels to face Cal State Stanislaus Saturday, Jan. 10. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Â
"We are going to head down the road tonight and prepare for Cal State Stanislaus tomorrow," said Kinder. "We are going to refocus after a big rivalry win and emotionally come down from a great overtime battle."
