ROHNHERT PARK, Calif. – The Humboldt State volleyball team will be happy to not have to see Sonoma State again this season. After falling to the conference leaders on Tuesday in Arcata, the Lumberjacks (6-8, 4-6) lost in straight sets (18-25, 16-25, 16-25) on the road Saturday night.
"Tonight we lost to a very good Sonoma team," said Head Coach
Kelly Wood. "As we head into the final weeks of our season, we know the areas of our game that need improvement and our focus will be on that."
The Jacks jumped ahead early in the first set, taking a 5-3 lead on a
Haley Biles service ace. The Seawolves (12-3, 8-1) responded with five consecutive points following the ace, and retook the set lead for good. Humboldt kept it close, staying within two points through 15-17, but Sonoma was able to extend the lead and win the set, 25-18.
The Green and Gold took a quick lead in the second set as well, going up 5-1. Sonoma State had responded with five unanswered points and took over the set. Down 16-19, the Jacks saw the second set come to a close after the Seawolves were able to rattle off six straight.
HSU never held a lead in the third set, and the match went to Sonoma State in three games for the second time this week.
Viridiana Serrano led the Lumberjacks in kills with eight, a new career high.
Alex Hasenstab and
Alondra Haro had three blocks apiece to lead HSU. The Seawolves (12-3, 8-1) are in sole possession of the California Collegiate Athletic Association lead with the win.
This was the first was match of a three-game road swing, with the Jacks scheduled to play at San Francisco State and Cal State East Bay next Friday and Saturday, respectively.
