Men’s Soccer Shows Tenacity in Second CCAA Draw

ARCATA, Calif. – For the second straight conference match, Humboldt State men's soccer walked away with a point after 110 minutes. The Lumberjacks (1-8-2, 0-5-2) and the visiting UC San Diego Tritons (5-4-5, 4-2-3) scored two goals apiece in an intense match.

"Our guys continue to play hard and fight for each other in one of the most frustrating seasons I have ever experienced," said Head Coach Fred Jungemann. "It is a testament to their character and team spirit."

The Jacks opened the scoring in the 34th minute of play. Riki Michael sent a ball into the box and connected with the head of the oncoming Trice Smith for the goal. Smith's header was his first goal of the season and gave HSU the lead through the opening period.

With Humboldt playing well to start the second half, the Tritons started a counter-attack to move forward toward goal. Attempting to slide in and clear the ball out of danger, HSU defender Cameron Spencer was called for a found inside the box, resulting in a penalty kick. San Diego's Brandon Magpayo finished the PK for his third goal of the year.

The Jacks did find an answer to the tough call in the box. With Humboldt on the offensive, UCSD was unable to clear the ball out of danger following an initial attack. Redshirt freshman Daniel Allred collected the ball at the top of the box. He was then able to squeeze the ball past several bodies, and the opposing goalkeeper, and find the far right side of the net for his first career goal in Green and Gold in the 79th minute.

Following the jubilation of the go-ahead goal, the Jacks found themselves in a second penalty kick situation. The center referee signaled to the PK spot after an apparent handball in the box call was made. Sam Palano stepped up and scored the equalizer in the 83rd minute to tie the score at two apiece.

Despite earning a pair of corner kicks in the overtime session, neither team could break the tie, and the match ended 2-2.

"San Diego is a good team and certainly deserve the point they earned today, however our guys did not deserve the bad luck and bad decisions that contributed to the results," said Jungemann. "We scored some goals and did not lose for the second straight game. All we can do now is build on the positives and keep working for a better result."

The Jacks will look to extend their point streak to three games when Cal State San Marcos comes to Arcata on Sunday. The match will kickoff at 2 p.m. at College Creek Field.
