Volleyball Completes Weekend Sweep with Victory

ARCATA, Calif. – It seems that all the Humboldt State volleyball team needed was a return to Lumberjack Arena. The Jacks (8-10, 6-8) now have a two-match win streak after defeating Cal State Los Angeles, 3-1 (22-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-18), on Friday night.

"We're really happen with the way this one went," said Head Coach Kelly Wood. "Other than how the match initially started, I felt our team really outplayed them in most aspects. We were serving well, passing well, and had another clean night at the net."

The Lumberjacks dropped the first set, after fall behind big 9-3 and 19-9. HSU did make it close with a 13-4 run to bring it within a point at 22-23, but LA was able to take the next two points following a timeout and claim the set.

The second set was truly back and fourth, featuring nine lead changes and 13 ties. At 20-20, the Green and Gold ensured that no more ties would occur and defeated Cal State LA with a run of five unanswered points.

The third set shifted in the Jacks favor following one of Symone Hayden's 26 kills. Hayden earned the point and then aced the serve that immediately followed and eventually turned a tie game into an 11-7 HSU advantage. Humboldt never gave back the lead, which reached a high of six points on four different occasions.

The Lumberjacks had an impressive start to the fourth set, building a 19-6 lead. Cal State LA was able to stay close thanks to a 9-1 run, but the lead never dipped under five as the Jacks ended the match with a 25-18 set victory.

"They are playing better and they still have faith in themselves," said Wood. "They are really bought in and just improving everyday. We now have two weekends at home for the first time this season."

The Lumberjacks will be back on campus for two home matches next week. Cal State East Bay comes to Arcata on Thursday night and San Francisco State will play at Lumberjack Arena on Oct. 31.
