ARCATA, Calif. – Humboldt State returned to game action on the Lumberjack Arena hardwood for the first time since cutting down the nets last February. In the season opening exhibition match, the Lumberjacks defeated Simpson, 76-55.
"Nothing beats game situations and playing other teams," said Head Coach
Joddie Gleason. "I thought Simpson played very well. They are quick, and tough to guard on their dribble-drive action."
Several members of its loaded senior class led the Jacks throughout the four quarters of action.
Amanda Kunst recorded a team-high 12 points, with
Nyaa Davis and
Jessica Johnson also tallying double-figure points with 10 apiece. Sophomore-transfer
Kiana Brown scored 10 as well in her debut with the Green and Gold.
Simpson's Esther Wofford finished with a game-high 18, while Kelsie Jurin added 13 of her own for the Redhawks.
"At this stage of the game we are really focused on getting better, but there is nothing like playing in front of the Lumberjack faithful," said Gleason.
The team will watch game film at practice on Wednesday and use it as a teaching tool going forward.
Humboldt returns to action with the second of three exhibition matches on Nov. 2, as the Bristol Bears come to campus. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
