Volleyball Suffers Loss to Strong San Bernardino Side

ARCATA, Calif. – Humboldt State volleyball could not follow up its historic Thursday night performance with another CCAA victory on Saturday night. The Lumberjacks (6-6, 4-4) once again evened its record after falling in straight sets (25-16, 25-15, 25-13) to Cal State San Bernardino (12-3, 5-2).

"Quite honestly, I was very disappointed in the way we played," said Head Coach Kelly Wood. "I said to the team, 'we've been coming back all year long, what's different tonight?', and we couldn't find the answer."

The match started off well for the Jacks, who extended their lead to 7-2 after a Haley Biles service ace in the opening set. Things took a turn as the Coyotes put together a pair of 5-1 runs to take the lead for good at 12-11. The two sides exchanged points, but the Jacks could not overcome the 10-2 run that ended the set.

The second set did not begin favorably for HSU, as the Green and Gold fell behind 7-1 early. The Jacks have shown the ability to rally in several matches this season, and the response to tie the set at 9-9 looked like another comeback was in store. Despite evening the score, the Jacks could not find a rhythm to turn things around, and dropped the set 25-15.

Katherine Rifilato served the Lumberjacks into a quick 2-0 lead in the third game, but again San Bernardino had an answer. The Coyotes put together two separate 6-0 runs in the set and walked away from Lumberjack Arena with a 25-13 set victory, and a three-set match win.

"We play Tuesday against another top team in the conference," said Wood. "I expect us to come out strong and really show up on Tuesday night."

HSU has a quick turnaround as Sonoma State visits campus Tuesday night. The Seawolves sit atop the California Collegiate Conference Standings and will prove to be another tough game. The CCAA match will conclude a three-game home streak for Humboldt State.
