ARCATA, Calif. – Senior
Rakim Brown dropped a career-high 31 points as the Humboldt State men's basketball team defeated Southern Oregon 86-63 in Tuesday's season opener in Lumberjack Arena.
"Rocky had an amazing night, and he has created a target on his back for our next opponent," said Head Coach
Steve Kinder. "It doesn't surprise me because he has been a little quiet and not so emotional in practice. He has been focused on playing good basketball."
Brown was 12-for-16 from the field and 3-for-4 from outside the arc. The Fresno, Calif., native also grabbed a career-high 18 boards for his first double-double of the 2015-16 campaign. He was one of four Lumberjacks with 10 or more points versus the Raiders.
Southern Oregon scored the first point of the game, but held the lead for only 22 seconds. HSU went on a 9-2 run in the opening minutes to capture the momentum.
HSU shot 56.3 percent from the field in the first half and took a commanding 46-25 lead into the locker room.
Brown added 11 of his 31 points after the break, and he helped the Jacks build a game-high 30-point advantage with 2:28 remaining.
Sophomore guard
Malik Morgan was the Jacks' top distributor and dished out a team-high eight assists. Tyrus Rattler scored 11 points in his collegiate debut after redshirting his freshman season.
HSU returns to action Saturday, Nov. 21, when it hosts Holy Names. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
