RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Humboldt State's tough early season schedule was in full effect on Saturday afternoon. The Lumberjacks (1-3) fell to No. 3 ranked California Baptist (4-0), 91-67.
"We competed with them for 30 minutes," said Head Coach
Joddie Gleason. "It was just unfortunate that we didn't start the game strong. They are national runners-up, they returned much of their team, and it showed."
The Lancers jumped out early, showing why they are averaging a plus-22.3 scoring margin per game this season. It was a 19-2 run in the opening quarter that put the Green and Gold in a hole. After the opening period, the Jacks were down, 32-12.
Despite the early deficit, HSU clawed back, and outscored the home team in the second quarter, 19-15.
Kiana Brown scored 13 of her game-high 21 points before intermission.
A nearly even third quarter showed that Humboldt would not go away. Despite being outrebounded 53-38 in the game, the Jacks were just outscored by a point, 21-20, in the quarter.
The initial deficit was too much to overcome, however, despite the ability shown by HSU to not let it grow further out of hand.
Amanda Kunst has hit double-figures in the scoring column in each game thus far this season, and continued on Saturday with 13 points on 5-for-13 shooting.
Neika Puryear filled the box score with nine points, five assists, and three boards.
"This is the toughest schedule I've ever had to start a season," said Gleason. "I'd rather do it this way, and be ready to compete for a conference championship."
Humboldt State will play again Wednesday night with their third consecutive road test. The Jacks will square off with Dominican, with tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
