OAKLAND, Calif. – Just in time for the transition into conference play, Humboldt State women's basketball earned its first road victory of the season. The Lumberjacks (2-4) came out firing at Holy Names (1-3) to earn the victory, 72-47.
"We started strong and set the tone early," said Head Coach
Joddie Gleason. "We used our defense to help create offense."
The Jacks jumped out of the gate with seven unanswered points before Holy Names hit its first field goal. The lead grew to 18-2 before the home side made its second field goal of the game. The Hawks shot just 17.6% (3-for-17) in the opening 10 minutes, causing the Green and Gold to open the game up and lead 23-7 at the end of the period.
Outside of the initial disparity, the remaining quarters were played closely, despite the Jacks never being outscored in any given period. After the initial cold spell, the Hawks jumped up to 31.6% shooting, as compared to 38.6% from the field for the Jacks.
Amanda Kunst just missed recorded her second double-double in as many games. The senior finished with 12 points and nine rebounds. Four of the five starters finished in double-figure points, with
Kiana Brown,
Neika Puryear, and
Teylor McMiller collecting 11 apiece. McMiller, too, was one rebound shy of a double-double. The remaining starter,
A'Jaee Foster, grabbed a season-high 12 rebounds to go along with her six points.
"Conference season is really long, and I thing this challenge preseason will only help," said Gleason. "Although our record is not where we wanted it to be, the level of competition we faced will prepare us down the road."
California Collegiate Athletic Association play begins on Thursday with a trip to Cal State San Marcos. Humboldt will have a quick turn around and host CCAA opponent Cal State Los Angeles on Dec. 5 at Lumberjack Arena. Both games are scheduled to begin at 5:30 with the men following.
