Volleyball Suffers Loss in Weekend Opener

LOS ANGELES - Humboldt State's road woes continued on Friday night in the City of Angels. The Lumberjacks (9-12, 7-10) were swept (25-19, 25-22, 25-21) by Cal State Los Angeles (18-7, 10-6).

"Tonight we passed very well, our defense was tough, but we did not execute from the setting position," said Head Coach Kelly Wood. "We also failed to capitalize on opportunities that we created for ourselves."

The Jacks jumped out to early leads in the opening set at 5-3 and 9-8. A 6-1 run by CSULA took the advantage away from the Green and Gold. Humboldt was unable to erase the deficit and dropped the opening set, 25-19.

After falling behind 7-1 early in the second set, it took the signature grit of the Lumberjacks to climb back into things. HSU earned back-to-back-to-back points late in the set to even the score at 20 apiece before four straight points by the Golden Eagles gave match point to the home side. The Jacks showed life, with consecutive kills by Kaitlyn Dunaway and Symone Hayden, but LA closed it out on the next serve. Dunaway and Hayden finished the match sharing the team-high with 12 kills apiece.

After opening the final set with a Dunaway kill, the Jacks never saw the lead again in the third game. The Golden Eagles pushed their lead up to six at 17-11, but Humboldt made it interesting at the end, bringing the set within two at 20-22. Cal State LA closed out the match earning three of the final four points, to win 25-21.

Viridiana Serrano earned her first start of the year, and finished the match with a season-high six assists.

"We spent very little time discussing the match afterwords," said Wood. "The girls know what went wrong. The team remains focused on getting the split this weekend. We will be ready for Dominguez Hills tomorrow night."

The Jacks will return to the court Saturday night at Cal State Dominguez Hills. The match will begin at 7 p.m. and will be the final regular-season road match of the year.
