ARCATA, Calif. – Humboldt State men's basketball dug itself out of an early deficit to defeat Fresno Pacific, 90-78, and capture its fourth straight win Monday in Lumberjack Arena. The non-conference victory was also Head Coach
Steve Kinder's 100
th as the Green and Gold leader.
"We battled and competed tonight," said Kinder. "We started doing our jobs and shored up our defense after we found ourselves down early. This team has confidence and momentum. It has proven that it can erase deficits by grinding out defensive possessions and playing winning basketball on the offensive end. They are maturing quickly."
The Sunbirds started the game strong and led by a game-high 11, 22-11, with just under 14 minutes to play in the first half.
Sophomore
Malik Morgan sparked the Green and Gold rally with a 3-pointer at the 9:24 mark. The Jacks (8-1) went on a 14-2 run over the next four minutes, which gave them a four-point lead.
Fresno Pacific regained its momentum and trimmed HSU's advantage to one with 21 seconds left in the first half. Morgan sank a tear-drop jumper as time expired to put the Green and Gold up 46-43 at the break. He scored 16 points in the win.
HSU shot 51.7 percent from the field in the second half and never trailed after intermission.
The Sunbirds made several second half runs, but a 3-pointer from senior
Thomas Witzel with 2:01 remaining put HSU up by 10 and proved to be the dagger. He finished with five points in the final 20 minutes and 10 points in the game.
Senior
Rakim Brown was once again the Jacks top scorer and rebounder. He notched his fourth double-double with 26 points and 11 rebounds. The Fresno, Calif., native also swiped a team-high three steals.
For the second time in the last three games, redshirt freshman
Tyras Rattler scored double-digit points. He compiled 17 points, was 5-for-5 from the free-throw line and sank a pair of 3-pointers.
HSU won the rebounding battle 37-31, and scored 23 points off of turnovers.
The Jacks return to action Saturday against Simpson. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
