LIVE STATS | LIVE RADIO | LIVE VIDEOLISTEN LIVE ON ESPN 92.7 FM / 1340 AM ARCATA, Calif. – The Humboldt State women's basketball team closes out its December schedule on Saturday evening. Western Oregon (1-11) visits Lumberjack Arena to play in the final non-conference game on both teams' schedules. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. and will be followed by the men's game against Simpson.
The Lumberjacks are coming off consecutive home wins and looking to finish the calendar year off on a positive note.
"Western Oregon is always a tough opponent for us," said Head Coach
Joddie Gleason. "The GNAC is typically a much bigger conference than ours. They have a good combination of size inside and some guard play that is very strong. They have kids that can get to the basket and others that can shoot it. They are going to work very hard."
Western Oregon is off to a rough start in 2015 and is riding a five-game losing streak. The Wolves are last in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in scoring, averaging 53.6 points per game and are being outscored by 13.0 points per game. Junior guard Jordan Mottershaw is leading the team with 11.3 points per game and shoots better than 40 percent from long range.
"Our next conference game is January 1, so there is a big gap," said Gleason. "There is a big gap between conference games, so having this game in between is really nice. The ending game is always a challenge because the girls are exhausted from finals and thinking about the break. We really try to hit home why this game is so important and come fired up and ready to play."
Several Jacks are amongst the statistical leaders in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Amanda Kunst is top-six in the CCAA in points, rebounds, defensive rebounds, rebounds per game, steals, field goals made, free throws made, free-throw percentage, minutes played, and games started.
Kiana Brown is first in the CCAA and second in NCAA Division II in free-throw percentage (97.6) this season, as well as top three in points scored, made threes, and 3-point shooting percentage. Within the conference,
Teylor McMiller is third with 10 blocks,
Neika Puryear is fourth with 16 steals, and
A'Jaee Foster is sixth with 70 total rebounds and 46 defensive rebounds.
Following Saturday's home game, the Jacks will not play again until Jan. 1 and 2 with games at UC San Diego and Cal State San Bernardino, respectively. Humboldt then returns to campus to host Chico State on Jan. 7 and Stanislaus State on Jan. 9 at Lumberjack Arena.
