FLORENCE, Ala. – Humboldt State sophomore running back
Ja'Quan Gardner was the 2015 Harlon Hill Trophy runner-up Friday.
"Ja'Quan had an incredible year, and we are very proud of his accomplishments," said HSU Athletic Director
Dan Collen. "Not only are his on-field achievements impressive, but he is also an outstanding representative of Humboldt State University off the field."
The Harlon Hill Trophy, an award that goes to the NCAA Division II most outstanding player, went to Ferris State quarterback Jason Vander Laan for the second consecutive season. Vander Laan finished with 217 total points, followed by Gardner with 107 points and Colorado State-Pueblo senior running back Cameron McDondle with 90 points.
"We are very proud of Ja'Quan. It is truly special what he was able to accomplish as just a sophomore," said Head Coach
Rob Smith. "I am so happy to see him receive this recognition. I know he shares his success with his offensive line, primarily, but also the tight ends, receivers and everyone involved in helping him have the season he did."
Gardner led NCAA Division II in total rushing yards (2,266), rushing yards per game (188.8) and rushing touchdowns (25).
The Ceres, Calif., native was selected as an All-American by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), the Associated Press and the Division II Conference Commissioners Association.
Gardner was the GNAC Offensive Player of the Year, a five-time conference player of the week and a unanimous First Team All-GNAC selection. He compiled 200-plus rushing yards in six games, including a record-breaking 305 yards against Azusa Pacific. He broke the GNAC single-season records for carries (337) and rushing yards (2,266).
Gardner received the most points of any previous Great Northwest Athletic Conference finalist. His 107 points were more than previous finalists Mike Reilly (85 points, Central Washington, 2008) and Scott Mitchell (17 points, Western Washington, 2001).
He is just the third Lumberjack football player nominated for the award and the first finalist in program history. Wide receiver Dustin Creager (2004) and quarterback Rodney Dorsett (1989) were the only previous Green and Gold representatives.
