ARCATA, Calif. – Humboldt State returns to the hardwood this week after splitting the opening week of California Collegiate Athletic Association play. The Lumberjacks (3-5, 1-1) will have the opportunity to play consecutive home games on Friday and Saturday against Sonoma State and San Francisco State, respectively.
"It's early in the season, so we haven't had a chance to look at a ton of film for these teams," said Head Coach
Joddie Gleason, "Every game is equally important in our conference. We aren't in panic mode yet. In this conference, the team that can focus and not have let downs can win in the end."
The Jacks swept both schools a season ago, and will look to string together a pair of wins again in the final home conference weekend of the calendar year. Sonoma State enters the game 4-5 overall and 0-2 in CCAA. San Francisco State will have the entire week off before matching up against the Green and Gold. The Gators are 3-4 overall this season and 1-1 in CCAA.
Both Sonoma State (34.5 percent) and Humboldt State (35.7 percent) are two of the three top shooting teams from behind the arc. Individually, Sonoma's Tanner Adams is third in the CCAA from long range at 48.3 percent and HSU's
Kiana Brown is fifth at 45.8 percent on the season. The early forecast for Friday predicts that it will be raining 3s at Lumberjack Arena.
San Francisco State fills the hustle stats portion of the box score. The Gators are averaging 9.5 blocks per game in conference play, five more than the next CCAA team, and 9.9 steals per game this season. The Jacks are Gators are second and third in the conference standings in offensive rebounds per game, averaging 16.1 and 14.4 per game, respectively. SFSU is led by double-double machine, Laura Lawson. The junior is averaging a double-double with 11.9 points and 10.7 rebounds per game.
"We are continually trying to improve both offensively and defensively," said Gleason. "We need to stay active and compete on the defensive end, and finish possessions offensively."
Both games will tip at 5:30 p.m. with live stats and video stream available online. The men will follow at 7:30 p.m.
