Jacks Return Home Against Warriors and Wildcats

Full Game Notes

ARCATA, Calif. – For only the third time this season, the Humboldt State women's basketball looks to bounce back after a loss.

The Lumberjacks split two southern California contests last weekend and they return home against California Collegiate Athletic Association opponents Cal State Stanislaus Thursday and Chico State Saturday. Both games tip at 5:30 p.m.

"We are thrilled to be at home and to have four of our last six at home. Our crowds have been great and I hope we can continue to make that push (to the playoffs) with our fans support," said HSU Head Coach Joddie Gleason.

After having a crowd of 932 in Lumberjack Arena against Sonoma State two weeks ago, HSU looks to set a new CCAA and a season-high in home attendance this weekend.

"We love the confines of Lumberjack Arena. Cal State Stanislaus beat us as far as crowd attendance (last Friday) with an event that drew 1,200. We want to beat that record this weekend," said Gleason.

On Saturday, the Jacks will have Play4Kay Breast Cancer Awareness Night when they host the rival Wildcats of Chico State. Everyone is encouraged to wear their pink to the game in support.

"Everyone has been impacted in some way, I would imagine. They started raising awareness with these basketball games and I jumped on board. I try to raise the awareness as much as I can," said Gleason.

In last Saturday's CCAA battle for the top spot, Cal State Dominguez Hills escaped with a 59-58 home win over HSU. It was a game of two second-half runs and the Toros proved to have the final one.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills victory tied it with HSU for the top CCAA spot at 14-2. The two teams split the regular season with the Jacks winning 77-70 in Arcata on Jan. 1.

"We are now tied with Cal State Dominguez Hills for first place in the conference," said Gleason. "It will be a dog fight to the finish out these last three weeks, but that is why we play the games."

The defending CCAA champion Cal Poly Pomona is one game behind the co-leaders at 13-3.

GLEASON RECORDS CAREER WIN 300
In her 16th year as a college head basketball coach, Joddie Gleason joined the 300 career coaching victory club.

With last Friday's victory over Cal State Los Angeles, Gleason won game number 300. She now has a 300-164 career winning mark for a 64.7 winning percentage.

Now in her 11th season with HSU, Gleason has run her Jacks record to 183-119 (60.6 percent) including this season's 18-3 overall record.

Earlier this season, Gleason passed former coach Pam Martin's 169 wins to become the winningest HSU head coach.

JACKS RETURN TO NO. 25
After moving up two spots to No. 23, HSU returned to No. 25 spot where it was ranked for two weeks in the latest USA TODAY DII Top 25 Coaches Poll. The Jacks lost half their points to 69 this week after they received 114 last week.

Cal Poly Pomona picked up three points to 13 as it is tied with Cal State Dominguez Hills (13) as the next CCAA members. Cal State San Bernardino completes the league members with three points.

In the inaugural D2SIDA Women's Basketball Division II Media Poll, HSU dropped six spots to No. 20 after reaching its highest ranking of No. 14.

LOOK TO CONTINUE RUN OVER WEEK'S FOES
Following wins in 14 of 16 CCAA games, HSU seeks its fourth and fifth opportunities to complete season sweeps of opponents this week. The Jacks have completed season sweeps of Sonoma State, San Francisco State and Cal State Los Angeles thus far in the CCAA second round.

On Thursday night, HSU looks for its fourth-straight sweep of Cal State Stanislaus and the ninth series win in a row overall. The Jacks are 8-0 versus the Warriors since joining the CCAA and won the last nine meetings in Arcata. HSU posted a 97-63 win last Jan. 23 in Lumberjack Arena. The Jacks won an 85-71 final over the Warriors on Jan. 10 in Turlock.

"We were fortunate to get the road win earlier in the season. They are a different style of team. They really press and we have to be ready to handle it," said Gleason. "They made a big run at us in the second half and made it closer than we wanted it (in the game in Turlock)."

HSU aims for its first season sweep of Chico State and first three-game win streak against the rival. The Jacks made it two road wins at Chico with an 89-84 win on Jan. 9. The Wildcats have prevailed in the last two meetings in Lumberjack Arena – 69-66 last Jan. 25 and 76-66 on Jan. 31, 2013. HSU produced a 72-62 win on Dec. 17, 2011 as its last home win against Chico State.

WILCOX AND SHIN NEAR HSU RECORDS
Kersey Wilcox and Jae Shin joined the HSU program at the same time, and the two Jacks seniors are both making their marks on the team's record book. Wilcox has 116 assists this season and needs 13 more to surpass her 129 from a year ago, the eighth most in a single season. With three more assists, she will move into the top eight single season again. Wilcox's 245 career assists are sixth most and 16 away from fifth.

Shin made five 3-pointers last weekend to surpass her 57 from a year ago, sixth most in a season. She moved into fourth on the single season list and 11 from tying for third. Her 117 career treys are ninth best and three from moving to eighth.
