ARCATA, Calif. –
Jae Shin drained seven 3-pointers and scored a game-high 25 points to help the Humboldt State women's basketball team cruise past Cal State Stanislaus, 85-62, in Lumberjack Arena Thursday night.
Shin sank her first trey 16 seconds into the game and
Megan Shields added a short jumper for the game's first five points. The Lumberjacks took control over the Warriors as they built a 24-5 lead halfway through the first half and were not challenged the rest of the game.
"It was nice to jump out on a team like we did. Every game is going to be tough. Our players did a good job preparing and executed in the first half," said HSU Head Coach
Joddie Gleason. "We did a nice job of knowing their sets and we defended before they made their cuts.
With the win, HSU improved to 19-3 on the season for its third 19-win season in 11 years under Gleason. The Jacks went to 15-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and they pulled a half game ahead of the Toros of Cal State Dominguez (14-2), which plays host to Cal State Monterey Bay Friday night. Cal State Stanislaus fell to 6-15 overall and 4-13 in the CCAA.
Shin was the biggest reason of HSU took a 42-18 lead into the half. The senior, who has led the Jacks in scoring in each of the last five home games, downed 4-of-5 treys and went 6-for-8 in the first half for 16 points. She finished with 7-of-10 from 3-point range and 9-for-15 from the field for her fourth 20-plus point night of the season. Shin added four rebounds, two steals and an assist to her line.
"It baffles me how she gets open so often. It has a lot to do with her teammate
Kersey Wilcox in transition. She finds Jae or someone else who finds Jae," said Gleason. "When you have a great shooter, you run different things to get the defense off of her or we will go into the post."
"I shoot a lot better at home than I do in away games," said Shin. "It is such a community feel (at home games). It gets louder and louder with each 3-pointer."
One of Shin's backcourt mates, Dani Gaumer produced a solid all-around performance. The senior from Hayward, Calif., hit 4-of-6 shots, including a pair of 3-pointers for 10 points. Gaumer also contributed six rebounds and five assists.
"Dani has been in the program for four years. She knows what we want and she has been around the conference now four times. She rebounds, defends and does all the dirty work," said Gleason.
"I had no idea I had such a decent night. I take a lot of pride in rebounding and defending. I also like assists. Personally, I like it (assists) almost as much as scoring," said Gaumer. "When Jae's hitting I like to get her the ball."
Gaumer dished out two of her team-best six assists on Shin 3-pointers.
HSU saw nine other players chip in four or more points.
Shields netted eight points, grabbed five boards, swiped three steals and handed out two assists.
Neika Puryear added seven points, while
A'Jaee Foster had six points and six rebounds.
Nikki Powell went 3-for-3 for six points to go with three rebounds and two blocked shots.
HSU handed out 20 assists and committed only 11 turnovers. The Jacks forced 18 Warrior turnovers.
Cal State Stanislaus' Riley Holladay led her team with 18 points and eight rebounds.
HSU moves on to host rival Chico State on Saturday night, Feb. 14, in a 5:30 p.m. contest.
"They're really good. It was a tight game up there," said Gleason. "They get up and down the court. We will have to rest for a fast paced game Saturday."
