Men’s Basketball Proves Too Much for Otters, Clinches CCAA Tournament Berth

SEASIDE, Calif. -- The Humboldt State men's basketball squad knows where it will be in early March. The Lumberjacks punched their ticket to the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament with Friday's 88-74 win over Cal State Monterey Bay.

The Tournament is held at Stockton Arena in Stockton, Calif., on March 5-7.

"We outrebounded Cal State Monterey Bay tonight, who leads the conference in rebounding. And doing that sets the stage for success," said Head Coach Steve Kinder. "We played together offensively and played assist basketball. When we can do those things, we are going to have a good night."

Malik Morgan splashed a 3-pointer to give HSU its first lead less than a minute into the game. But the Green and Gold did not hold the edge for long.

Cal State Monterey Bay led until the 12:20 mark, when point Rakim Brown drained a 3-point basket of his own to knot the game at 14-14. HSU kept the momentum and led by five at the half, 37-32. Brown scored a career-best 26 points in the win and was 9-for-14 shooting.

The Jacks never trailed after the break and shot 58.1 percent from the field in the second half.

Calvin Young II recorded a double-double against the Otters. The Fresno, Calif., native matched his season-high with 12 rebounds and scored 16 points. Young connected on 58 percent (7-for-12) of his shots.

"He had some big dunks and really lifted our team emotionally," said Kinder. "Calvin knew he was going to play significant minutes with two starters out, and he stepped up."

Allan Guei finished with 21 points, dished out four assists and swiped three steals. He also limited the Otters' leading scorer Evan Zeller to 13 points in the game.

HSU travels to Hayward, Calif., to take on Cal State East Bay tomorrow evening. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

"We will get ourselves hydrated, iced down and ready to travel to face Cal State East Bay," said Kinder. "Our goal is to sweep this road trip. We will enjoy this victory until midnight and then concentrate on tomorrow's game."
