SAN FRANCISCO --Â The Lumberjacks found their stroke at the plate in day two against the Gators. Humboldt State softball picked up a pair of 9-1 wins against San Francisco State to complete the series sweep Saturday.
"We played two good games today and it is always nice to sweep," said Head Coach
Shelli Sarchett. "These are the game we need to win. We were able to use our non-starters a lot this weekend, which allows them to gain valuable experience that is going help us in the end."
Julie Pena continued her blazing offensive production as she went 6-for-6 against Gator pitching in games three and four of the series. She was responsible for three HSU runs, two in the nightcap.
Â
Both Green and Gold hurlers limited the Gator bats Saturday. Both
Katie Obbema and
Madison Williams earned wins and neither gave up an earned run.
Â
HSU begins a four-game stretch against Cal State East Bay Friday, Feb. 27, at noon.
Â
GAME ONEÂ
HSU struck first and never looked back in its 9-1 victory over San Francisco State.
Â
The Jacks'
Cyndi Chavez lined a two-run double into left field in the second inning to begin the scoring effort. Her hit scored
Amber Rose from second and an error in left field allowed
Alison McKibbon to round third and come home.
Â
Leading 2-0 to start the third, HSU added another two runs to its total.
Tiffany Hollingsworth crushed her second home run of the series and third of the season to lead off the inning. McKibbon grounded a two-out single up the middle to bring another run across the plate.
Â
The Gators cut the Jacks' lead to 4-1 with an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth.
Â
McKibbon continued her hot streak with her next at-bat. She launched an RBI double in the fifth, and she finished the game 2-for-2 with a walk.
Â
The floodgates opened as the Green and Gold plated four more runs in the sixth frame.
Dani Randall highlighted the scoring effort with a two-run bomb to left centerfield.
Â
Obbema was dealing in game one and picked up her fourth win of the season. She outshined her twin sister in the decision, tossed six innings and fanned a pair of Gators.
Â
San Francisco State's Megan Clark was saddled with the loss. She allowed four runs, three earned, in three innings. Jenny Obbema took the circle midway through the game and yielded five earned runs.
Â
GAME TWOÂ
The Green and Gold offense put on a show in the series finale, as the Jacks scored in each inning of the 9-1 five-inning victory.
Â
Pena notched one of her three hits in the first inning, an RBI single that scored Hollingsworth following her two-out double.
Â
A Harris double in the second frame increased the Jacks' lead to 5-0 after
Hanna Holland drove in the game's fourth run on an RBI single up the middle. Harris matched Pena's output in game two and finished with three hits.
Â
Pena led the third inning off with a double and came home on a
Hannah Williams sacrifice fly to extend the Green and Gold edge to six runs.
Â
HSU scored three more runs in the game's final two innings. Pena slapped an RBI single in the fourth, and pinch hitter
Winona Vigil drove in
Carly Perkins on a single an inning later.
Kelly Sonnemann stole the show in the game's final inning, literally. The freshman out of Gardnerville, Nev., stole a pair of bases in the fifth, including home.
Â
Madison Williams tossed three innings and earned the win, her third of the season. She recorded three punchouts and allowed a pair of hits.
