Women’s Basketball Outlasts Cal State East Bay 69-67

HAYWARD, Calif. -- Humboldt State women's basketball outlasted Cal State East Bay, 69-67, on its Senior Night Saturday in Pioneer Gymnasium.

The Lumberjacks extend their winning streak to four games and improve to 22-3 overall and 18-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Cal State East Bay slips to 11-9 in conference and 16-9 overall.

Hayward, Calif., native Danielle Gaumer not only had a homecoming Saturday, but also played the role of hero for the Green and Gold. She scored nine points in the second half and sank a 3-point basket to put the game out of reach, 69-65, with 2:31 left. Gaumer had 14 points and was 3-for-7 shooting from outside the arc.

"Cal State East Bay is a dangerous team," said Gaumer. "Tonight we knew when we needed a basket, and we knew how to get one. Our team works hard and we were able to grind this win out."

The Pioneers had several opportunities to force overtime or upset the Jacks in the final seconds of the game, but the HSU defense was up for the challenge.

With seven seconds left and possession in the hands of HSU's Kersey Wilcox, Cal State East Bay used its press defense to rattle the Jacks and get a final chance at a comeback.

After Micah Walker's fourth steal of the night, Stephanie Lopez dribbled down the key looking for redemption in her final regular season home game. But she came up short — not once, but twice — missing a jump shot and a layup underneath the basket before the final buzzer sounded.

"It was the longest six seconds ever," said Head Coach Joddie Gleason. "I think they got three shots off, and it is always dangerous to let Stephanie Lopez have the ball."

HSU led by four, 37-33, at the half. A'jaee Foster, the Jacks' leading scorer, connected on a layup and converted an and-one opportunity to bring the period to a close. Foster finished with a team-best 19 points, and she was 6-for-12 from the field and 7-for-7 at the free throw line. The Fontana, Calif., product also grabbed nine rebounds and a pair of steals.

Cal State East Bay outrebounded HSU 50-39. Micah Walker and Tori Breshers both compiled 11 rebounds for the Pioneers. Lopez scored a team-high 24 points for the home team and led her team with six assists.

Neika Puryear joined Gaumer and Foster with a double-digit scoring performance. She paced the Green and Gold with six assists and scored 10 points.

HSU welcomes UC San Diego and Cal Poly Pomona to Lumberjack Arena next weekend. The Jacks host the Tritons on Thursday, Feb. 26. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
