GAMEDAY CENTRALLIVE STATSLUMBERJACK SOCIAL MEDIATWITTERÂ |Â FACEBOOKÂ |Â INSTAGRAMARCATA, Calif. -- After completing a four-game sweep of California Collegiate Athletic Association foe San Francisco State last weekend, the Humboldt State softball team returns to work with four road games against Cal State East Bay beginning Friday at noon.
Â
The Lumberjacks swept the Gators in a four-game set for the second time in three years and ran their record to 4-0 in conference play. Strong pitching performances by
Katie Obbema and
Madison Williams helped the Green and Gold outscore their Bay Area rivals 28-3. Obbema logged a pair of complete game victories and did not allow an earned run in 13.0 innings.
Tiffany Hollingsworth and
Julie Pena combined for 14 hits in the series.
Â
"I wouldn't have expected anything less against San Francisco. We should have gone in there and taken four," said Head Coach
Shelli Sarchett. "It would have been a disappointment if we had lost one game, but we got close on Friday. It was a true testament to the team that as long as there are outs left, that this team is going to come back and fight until the end. This weekend gave us a chance to see other players, we had a chance to see a lot of our nonstarters and give them a chance. Hopefully we will get the chance to see more of them this weekend."
Â
HSU moved up one spot to No. 19 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Top 25 poll released Wednesday.
Â
Cal State East Bay went 1-3 against Chico State last weekend and is looking to change its early season fortune against HSU. Following their series versus the Wildcats, the Pioneers ranked second in the CCAA with 15 home runs and first with 79 RBI. Sarchett warns that the Pioneers are not a team to overlook, especially with their power numbers.
Â
"Hitting is there strength, and they have good hitters who can hit for power," said Sarchett. "Their pitchers are average. We can't take these games against Cal State East Bay lightly. We are going to have to play seven innings for four games and, like we didn't do at San Francisco, we have to take advantage of scoring opportunities with runners on base."
Â
Pioneers Kelsey LaVaute and Jaynie MacDonald each have three home runs and were tied for fifth in the CCAA. Cal State East Bay's ace Sierra Clark has had a roller coaster season so far and yielded 12 runs on 16 hits in Saturday's 12-5 loss to Chico State.
