Guei’s Late-Game Heroics Lead Men’s Basketball Past Tritons

ARCATA, Calif. -- Allan Guei sank a pair of game-winning free throws to lead the Humboldt State men's basketball team to an 81-80 overtime victory over visiting UC San Diego.

The Lumberjacks improve to 20-7 overall and 14-7 in California Collegiate Athletic Conference play with the win. It marks the Green and Gold's first 20-win season since the 2011-12 campaign. UC San Diego falls to 15-10 and 13-8 in conference action.

HSU trailed by four, 78-74, with 33 seconds left in the overtime period, but a 3-point basket by Ethan Dillard trimmed the lead to one. A Guei layup with 20 seconds remaining put HSU up 79-78 until Grant Jackson helped UC San Diego recapture its edge.

With under 10 to go and HSU down 80-79, Guei took the inbounds pass and attacked the basket. He drew a foul, toed the line and sank the game-winning free throws. The Compton, Calif., native scored six of the Green and Gold's 10 overtime points and finished tied with a team-best 22.

"UC San Diego was patient and was able to execute in tonight's game," said Head Coach Steve Kinder. "They are very aware of the matchups and it was a tactical nightmare for us. It came down to great players making great plays. Allan Guei is a winner. From head to toe, it's in his blood. You cherish the moment when he does something well. This kid is dedicated to the game and works so hard."

Austin Bryan's 12 first-half points gave HSU an eight-point, 33-25, advantage at halftime. The Jacks led for the final 13:22 of the period, but the Tritons sent the game to intermission with an Aleks Lipovic layup.

The Green and Gold extended their lead to a game-high 12, 53-41, with a Malik Morgan basket at the 11:23 mark. Morgan scored all eight of his points in the second half and was 4-for-8 shooting.

A Hunter Walker jumper at 1:03 put the Tritons ahead, 70-69, for the first time in the second period. Walker was UC San Diego's leading scorer and finished with 25 points on 11-of-16 shooting. He connected on 3-of-6 opportunities from long distance and was 7-for-7 at the free throw line.

Bryan matched Guei's scoring output with 22 points. The Wenatchee, Wash., native was a perfect 3-for-3 shooting in the second half and knocked down his one 3-point opportunity.

"Austin hit shots early in the game, which give the whole team confidence," said Kinder. "It forces opponents to focus on him, double team him and try to deny him the ball. It opens up a lot of things for us."

Calvin Young II paced HSU with nine rebounds and scored nine points. He also tallied a game-high three blocks.

HSU hosts Cal Poly Pomona Saturday in Lumberjack Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and Senior Day festivities will take place prior to the game.
