The Lumberjacks battle California Collegiate Athletic Association foe Cal State Los Angeles Friday, before they take on second-place Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday. Both games tip at 5:30 p.m.
"These are two pivotal games for us," said HSU Head Coach
Joddie Gleason. "LA won six of its last eight games and they were up 12 points at halftime against us at home. Dominguez Hills is one game out of first place and vying to get the conference championship."
With the pair of home wins last week over Sonoma State and San Francisco State, HSU was able to maintain its one game lead in the CCAA standings.
"Every night we get everyone's best game and best effort," said Gleason. "We were clicking on all cylinders on offense last weekend."
The Jacks improved to 13-1 in league play and their Saturday night win helped surpass last year's CCAA win total of 12.
HSU has won 17 of its last 18 CCAA contests dating back to last season's final two weeks.
The North Coast team holds a one game lead over its Saturday night opponent, Cal State Dominguez Hills (12-2) and a two-game lead over Cal Poly Pomona (11-3).
GLEASON CHANCE FOR CAREER WIN 300 In her 16th year as a college head basketball coach,
Joddie Gleason needs one win for her 300th career coaching victory.
"It is a tribute to all the great players we had," said Gleason of her approaching win milestone. "We won three conference titles in a row at Butte and we were able to grow the HSU program and get it on the map as far as postseason goes."
Gleason goes into this week with a 299-163 career mark for a 64.7 winning percentage.
The head coach started her career at Butte College, where she amassed a 117-45 record in five seasons.
Now in her 11th season with HSU, Gleason has run her Jacks record to 182-118 (60.1 percent) including this season's 17-2 overall record.
Earlier this season, Gleason passed former coach Pam Martin's 169 wins to become the winningest HSU head coach.
JACKS MOVE UP TO NO. 23 After two weeks at No. 25, HSU moved up in the latest USA TODAY DII Top 25 Coaches Poll. The Jacks rose to No. 23 and increased their points to 114, 28 more than the previous week.
Cal Poly Pomona dropped to 10 points as the next CCAA member. Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State San Bernardino complete the league members with eight and six points, respectively.
In the inaugural D2SIDA Women's Basketball Division II Media Poll, HSU went to its highest ranking of No. 14, up 10 spots from No. 24.
LOOK FOR ANOTHER SET OF SWEEPS Following wins in 13 of 14 CCAA games, HSU seeks its second and third opportunities to complete season sweeps of opponents this week. The Jacks recorded their first two season sweeps last week of Sonoma State and San Francisco State.
"It is always tougher to play the teams the second time. It comes down to who executes the best and who wants it in the second round," said the HSU coach.
On Friday night, HSU looks for its first sweep of Cal State Los Angeles in four seasons. The Jacks swept the Golden Eagles during the 2010-11 campaign (71-70 at LA & 73-63 at HSU). The two rivals are 3-3 against one another over the last six meetings. The last HSU win in LA came on Jan. 21, 2011 in a one point, 71-70 final.
HSU aims to prevail in the clash of what has the potential to be the top two CCAA teams Saturday night at Cal State Dominguez Hills. After winning the first meeting on New Year's night (77-70) in Arcata, HSU has the chance to take both games for the first time in three years. During the 2011-12 season, HSU swept CSUDH (65-60 at DH & 68-55 at HSU). The two teams split last year's two meetings. The Jacks won 65-60 on Jan. 7, 2012 as their last win in Carson.
WILCOX AND SHIN NEAR HSU RECORDS Kersey Wilcox and
Jae Shin joined the HSU program at the same time, and the two Jacks seniors are both making their marks on the team's record book.
Wilcox has 111 assists this season and needs 18 more to surpass her 129 from a year ago, the eighth most in a single season. With eight more assists, she will move into the top eight single season again. Wilcox's 240 career assists are sixth most and 21 away from fifth.
Shin has made 55 treys and needs three more 3-pointers to surpass her 57 from a year ago, sixth most in a season. With five more, she will move into fourth on the single season list. Her 112 career treys are 10th.
