Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Outlasts Cal State Los Angeles 70-69

LOS ANGELES -- Senior Allan Guei scored a season-best 24 points and led the Humboldt State men's basketball team past Cal State Los Angeles 70-69 in Friday's nail biter in the Eagles Nest.

With their fourth-straight win, the Lumberjacks are 15-6 overall and 9-6 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. Cal State LA sank to 9-10 overall and 6-9 in conference with the loss.

"We broke the game early in the first half," said Head Coach Steve Kinder. "We were on pace early to repeat what we did at home (against Cal State LA). They closed the gap and had momentum going into halftime, but our guys held strong and did I nice job of playing 20 more minutes of basketball. Allan Guei is the heart and soul of our basketball team. He did a lot on the stat sheet, but he did more than that. Allan was able to take over when our team needed a big play. He was a great player tonight."

Cal State LA outscored HSU 40-35 in the second half and erased a six-point, 35-29, halftime advantage.

Guei scored 14 points in the first period, but it was his 10 second-half points which proved to be the most important. He sank a jumper with 12 seconds left in regulation to put the game out of reach, 68-64. Guei was 9-for-13 shooting, 2-for-2 from outside the arc and 4-for-5 from the charity stripe.

Cal State LA threatened to take the lead several times in the second half. The Golden Eagles pulled to within one point, 59-58, with 3:44 remaining in the game after a Joel Brokenbrough jumper. Brokenbrough led all Golden Eagles' scorers with 17 points on 6-of-13 shooting.

The Jacks led by as many as 15 points in the first period, 35-20, with 2:15 left in the first half, before allowing a late surge by the Golden Eagles. Cal State LA ended the period on a 9-0 run.

Austin Bryan and Malik Morgan reached double figure scoring totals for HSU and finished with 17 and 12 points, respectively. Bryan was 4-for-10 from long distance and scored a team-high 11 points in the second half.

HSU travels to face Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday evening. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

"Cal State Dominguez Hills is having a promotion going on and I imagine they will have a huge crowd," said Kinder. "They will be hungry and be pumped up to have great performances in front of their home crowd. We need to rest up, have a good scout and a good practice tomorrow. Our team has to prepare for a heightened emotional game from (Cal State) Dominguez Hills."
