ARCATA, Calif. – When the Lumberjacks needed them most, the Green and Gold sluggers made contact – and made it count. Humboldt State softball swept its series-opening twinbill against Cal State Stanislaus Friday at the HSU Softball Field.
HSU won the series opener in come-from-behind fashion, 7-5, and wrapped the doubleheader with an 11-7 victory.
Tiffany Hollingsworth accounted for three of the Jacks' five long balls Friday, including a walk-off three-run bomb to lift the Green and Gold past the Warriors in the opener. She finished the afternoon 4-for-8 at the dish with seven RBI.
"It was another big comeback win," said HSU Head Coach
Shelli Sarchett. "We have to credit the players' mental toughness. They hung in and finished strong. I tip my cap to Domnitz. She came in again in relief and kept us in the ball game."
Kelsie Domnitz relieved
Katie Obbema in game one and helped kickstart the HSU comeback. Domnitz tossed 4.1 innings of one-run ball and picked up her second decision of the year. She picked up her first save in game two, and
Madison Williams earned her team-leading eighth win of the season.
Dani Randall and
Sydney Roberts also found their power stroke against Stanislaus. Each tallied a home run in the nightcap.
The teams conclude the series Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. PT.
GAME ONE HSU trailed 5-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, but Sarchett felt confident her team could repeat Monday's magic.
"I knew in the seventh, once we had runners on base and the top of our order at-bat, that we score," said Sarchett. "We called a timeout because we knew they were going to walk Tiffany if we bunted with Darian. But Darian has been swinging a good bat so we didn't want to take the bat out of her hands. We knew that if they walked Tiffany, they would have Randall to deal with. We had the right people up to bat."
Hollingsworth drove a 2-0 pitch from Warrior reliever Cheyenne Harper over the right field wall to clinch the Green and Gold win.
Hannah Holland and Kelly Sonneman each swiped a base in the early game.
GAME TWO The Jacks never trailed in game two, and Hollingsworth, Randall and Roberts all smacked round-trippers in the nightcap.
HSU scored three runs in the first inning on another Hollingsworth long ball and added to the lead the rest of the game.
Williams ran into trouble in the four-run fourth inning, but kept the Warriors from overcoming HSU's 5-4 lead. Domnitz faced four batters in the final 1.1 innings and picked up the save.
"Maddie struggled a little bit in the second game, but we were able to put some runs on the board," said Sarchett. "And Domnitz came in again in relief and got the save."
Holland snagged three more bags and has collected 25 total stolen bases this season.
