ANCHORAGE, Alaska – It wasn't the freezing temperatures that stopped the Humboldt State women's basketball team's postseason run – it was ice-cold shooting and No. 6 seed Seattle Pacific. The Lumberjacks lost 77-62 Friday in the West Region Tournament opener at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Green and Gold finish the season with a 23-6 overall record. Seattle Pacific advances to face the winner of No. 7 Cal Poly Pomona and No. 2 Cal State Dominguez Hill in the West Region Tournament semifinals.
HSU overcame a 20-point deficit in its California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament loss to Cal State East Bay, but was unable to repeat the feat against Seattle Pacific.
The North Coast squad scored the first four points of the game, but saw its shooting percentage drop following the first media timeout. The Jacks' largest lead of the game was four, 10-6, at the 15:36 mark.
Seattle Pacific rode a 27-6 run to 5:11 on the first-half clock and compiled a 33-16 advantage. The Falcons led by 21, 45-24, at halftime.
"The first half was rough," said HSU Head Coach
Joddie Gleason. "We had a lot of open looks, but couldn't find the bottom of the net. Megan was out and we couldn't go inside as much as we would have liked. We made the adjustment in the second half, and it made the difference and gave us more offensive flow. We just weren't able to make the shots we normally do."
The Jacks shot 25.7 percent from the field in the first half, and senior
Megan Shields provided little impact on the bench with two early fouls.
Kersey Wilcox led HSU with seven first-half points, two assists and two blocks.
Aubree Callen and the Falcons held on to their double-digit lead for the remainder of the game. Callen was Seattle Pacific's top scorer and led all scorers with 16 points on 7-of-14 shooting.
HSU finished the game shooting 26 percent from the field and just 31.6 percent from long distance. The Falcons outrebounded the Green and Gold by 12, 53-41, and Jordan McPhee and Molly Grager led the way with seven boards apiece.
Friday's game also marked the last appearance by the HSU senior class. Despite the result, Gleason said the memories will stick with her and the rest of the women's basketball staff.
"You build really strong relationships with your seniors, and our team has a lot of character," said Gleason. "We will remember the big game against Cal Poly Pomona, cutting down the nets and all the road trips over the years."
