Balanced Jacks Salvage Split Versus Seawolves, Harris Breaks CCAA Record

ARCATA, Calif. – Timely hitting and a lights-out pitching performance by Katie Obbema helped the Humboldt State softball team sweep Sonoma State and secure a series split Saturday at the HSU Softball Field. HSU won the first game 14-4 in six innings before wrapping the series with a 6-1 win.

Saturday's doubleheader sweep improves the Lumberjacks' California Collegiate Athletic Association record to 14-6 and their overall mark to 21-10. The Seawolves fall to 14-5 in conference and 22-7 overall.

"The difference today was intensity," said Head Coach Shelli Sarchett. "We can put runs on the board, but if there is no passion or emotion behind it we will be dead. Today they came out from the second we warmed up and had that passion."

Not only did the Green and Gold collect a pair of wins Saturday, but they also secured a CCAA record. Darian Harris notched her 26th and 27th consecutive games with a hit to capture the conference record that has stood for 12 years. The Rocklin, Calif., product tallied four total hits in games three and four versus the Seawolves.

The Jacks offense exploded for a season-high 14 runs in game one. Tiffany Hollingsworth and Julie Pena each slugged a pair of homers in the 14-4 victory. Pena drove in a team-high seven runs on two hits, both of which were long balls.

HSU avoided a letdown in the nightcap behind a strong performance by Obbema. The Morgan Hill, Calif., native went the distance and fanned seven en route to her 11th win of the season. Obbema did not allow a multi-hit inning in the series finale and surrendered only one unearned run.

"I spent all night looking at the charts trying to find out what we did right and wrong yesterday," said Sarchett. "Today our pitchers had confidence in their pitches and that the defense was going to make plays behind them. Both of our pitchers executed their pitches well and made Sonoma State pay for what its hitters did yesterday."

HSU travels to Turlock, Calif., next week to take part in the annual Tournament of Champions. The Jacks face Chaminade, Western Washington and Azusa Pacific on Friday. First pitch against the Silverswords is scheduled for 8:45 a.m.
