TURLOCK, Calif. – Humboldt State softball defeated Hawaii Pacific, 2-0 in eight innings, and Dominican, 10-2 in five innings, to complete its day two sweep at the Tournament of Champions.
With the wins, HSU improves to 36-10 overall this season.
It took some extra-inning magic to lift the Lumberjacks over Hawaii Pacific in game one.
Hannah Williams and
Breonna Bejaran drove in the Green and Gold's only runs in the eighth inning.
Madison Williams dominated the Sharks. She gave up three hits, walked a pair and struck out six. The victory was her team-high 14th of the season and her third against Tournament of Champions opposition.
"Against Hawaii Pacific, we just couldn't get the timing down. Their starting pitcher (Kristen Caskey) was keeping us off balance all game," said HSU Head Coach
Shelli Sarchett. "It came down to the international tiebreaker, and we executed when we needed to.
Dani Randall put down a great bunt to move
Carly Perkins to third, and
Hannah Williams did a great job of getting the fly ball we needed to score Perkins.
Madison Williams had another good game and really kept us in the ball game. I am really proud of the ladies and how they fought in game one, and then they carried the momentum into game two."
HSU tallied six runs in the first inning of game two and never looked back versus the Penguins.
Hannah Williams continued her hot streak at the plate with a two-run double in the first.
Hanna Holland went 2-for-4 against Dominican and extended her streak of reaching base safely to 36 games. Holland also swiped her conference leading 37th base of the season.
Pitching wasn't a problem for the Jacks in the nightcap.
Katie Obbema logged the first three innings before
Robin Johnson took the circle in relief.
Obbema was sharp. She fanned five, walked one and allowed two hits. The Morgan Hill, Calif., product picked up the win, her 10th of the season.
"In game two we came out firing and never really stopped," said Sarchett. "Obbema threw another strong game and all through the lineup we were able get production."
The Green and Gold punched their ticket to the Gold Bracket and will play Sunday afternoon at 12:15 p.m. The opponent has yet to be determined.
"We are looking forward to tomorrow and finishing off this tourney on a high note," said Sarchett.
