ARCATA, Calif. – Humboldt State softball hosts Cal State Dominguez Hills Thursday and Friday at the HSU Softball Field. First pitch for both days is scheduled for 1 p.m.
The Lumberjacks resume their California Collegiate Athletic Association schedule riding a nine-game winning streak and are winners of 20 of their last 25 games. HSU defended its Tournament of Champions title Sunday with a 6-1 Gold Bracket victory over Western Washington. Three Green and Gold student-athletes collected all-tournament honors:
Hanna Holland,
Dani Randall and
Madison Williams. Randall was also the Tournament's top hitter and Obbema its top pitcher.
HSU carries its momentum into a pivotal four-game homestand versus Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Jacks went 4-0 against the Toros last season.
"The Toros are tough, and they are going to give us a ball game," said HSU Head Coach
Shelli Sarchett. "They have a balanced attack and will give you a fight. Dominguez Hills just took a game from Sonoma State in its championship game in the Tournament of Champions."
Dominguez Hills has put together a win streak of its own and has won its last four games, including wins over Chaminade, Dominican, Simon Fraser and Sonoma State. The Toros have a 19-15 overall record and 12-8 conference mark.
Jasmine Ruiz is the Toros' top hitter and is batting .343 with five home runs and 26 RBI. She has hit safely in 12 straight games.
"These are must-win games for us, and it is important to keep our momentum going," said Sarchett. "Ever game left on our schedule is important, and no game will be an easy win."
Sarchett points to the development of two Green and Gold batters as reasons for the Jacks' success last weekend.
"Two that have really been catching on are
Hannah Williams and
Breonna Bejaran," said Sarchett. "Bejaran is really seeing the ball better, and Williams is helping us in the bottom half of the lineup."
Bejaran went 7-for-16 (.438) at the plate for the Jacks in Tournament of Champions play. She was responsible for a three-run homer that helped lead HSU past Western Washington, 8-0 in five innings, in their first Tournament meeting. In the last 10 games,
Hannah Williams has been swinging a steady bat for the North Coast team. She hit .400, drilled two home runs and drove in 10 during the stretch.
