Softball Finishes Chico State Series with Split, Clinches Trip to Stockton

CHICO, Calif. – Chico State rode a wave of Senior Day excitement to a Saturday and series split with the No. 12-ranked Humboldt State softball program. The Lumberjacks won game one of the twinbill 6-2 before dropping an extra-inning series finale showdown, 2-1.

Despite breaking even with the Wildcats this weekend, the Jacks punched their ticket to the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament in Stockton, Calif., beginning Friday, May 1.

HSU returns to the North Coast with a 24-8 conference record and a 38-12 overall mark.

The Green and Gold began the day sitting atop the CCAA standings with rival Cal State Monterey Bay, but slipped to the No. 2 spot following an Otter sweep of Cal State Stanislaus. The Jacks host the Otters with a CCAA regular season title on the line next weekend.

After starting from behind in both of Friday's games, the Jacks took the early edge in Saturday's first contest. Hannah Williams drove in a pair with a two-run single in the first inning.

Chico State evened the score with a run in the bottom of the first and another in the third, but Alison McKibbon helped HSU regain the lead in the fourth.

Game two featured a pitchers' duel between Madison Williams and Chico State's Brooke Langeloh. The pair allowed one run apiece through the first seven innings.

Langeloh was relieved in the seventh and replaced by Cailin Garmon, but Williams went the distance for HSU.

Ashley Huff led off the 10th with a triple and scored the game-winning run on a two-out wild pitch.

HSU stranded eight base runners in the loss and had several opportunities to score a run in extra innings. The Jacks had runners in scoring position in the eighth and ninth frames.

Darian Harris led the Jacks with a pair of hits in the nightcap.

Hanna Holland reached base in both games and extended her streak to 49 games. She remains two games behind Sonoma State's Keeley Ray (51) after she added to her streak in both of the Seawolves' Saturday wins.
