Obbema and the Long Ball Lead HSU to First Round CCAA Tournament Victory

STOCKTON, Calif. – A dominating 11-strikeout effort by pitcher Katie Obbema and home runs from Dani Randall and Julie Pena led the Humboldt State softball team to a 4-0 California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament win over Sonoma State Friday at Arnaiz Stadium.

HSU's win propels it to a second round meeting with rival Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday at noon. The Lumberjacks also improved their season record to 40-15 overall.

"The intensity of the team was on point today," said HSU Head Coach Shelli Sarchett. "The difference in today's game was Pena and Randall's ability to capitalize on missed pitches. I am very proud of this team today."

Pena smacked a solo home run in the second inning to right centerfield to put the Green and Gold on the board, 1-0. The San Diego, Calif., native was the only HSU player with a multi-hit outing versus Sonoma State and co-Pitcher of the Year Amanda Llerena.

The Seawolf ace limited the Jacks to one hit over the next three frames and just five hits in the complete game performance.

HSU's three-run sixth inning began with catcher Darian Harris taking a pitch high and inside off her shoulder, followed by a Tiffany Hollingsworth single. Randall came to the plate with runners at first and second and swatted her 50th career long ball. Her home run ties her for second all-time in program history with Taiisha Pleasant (1997-2000).

Obbema kept the Seawolves off the board in the top of the seventh and cruised to her 19th victory of the season. Her 11 strikeouts matched a season and career-high, and the Morgan Hill, Calif., product scattered five hits in the win.

"This will give us momentum going into tomorrow's game with Monterey Bay," said Sarchett. "If we execute we will win. Our team is capable of dealing with anything that is given to it. It won't be easy. We want to go out there with the same intensity tomorrow and play our game."
