STOCKTON, Calif. – The Humboldt State softball team was unable to defend its California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament title Sunday as it lost to Cal State Monterey Bay, 2-0.
Third baseman Alissa Greenhaw secured the Otters' win with a two-run home run to left field off Lumberjack starter
Katie Obbema in the bottom of the fifth. Greenhaw's walk-off homer on Saturday also gave HSU its first loss of the tournament.
"We played well against Monterey Bay," said HSU Head Coach
Shelli Sarchett. "Katie pitched a good game. She made one mistake and they capitalized on it. But other than that, we were in it the whole time."
Obbema had another great outing for the Green and Gold – striking out five, while only walking two. She gave up two earned runs on five hits in six innings.
Despite pitching a gem, Obbema took the loss, which moved her record to 20-10.
Nabbing the win for Monterey Bay was CCAA Player of the Year Cori Reinhardt. The senior threw a three-hit shutout, walked three and struck out one.
"Reinhardt is a good pitcher," Sarchett said. "She was taking our legs out of the equation a lot of the time. We weren't getting enough runners on base and putting the pressure on them."
Although Reinhardt kept the Jacks off balance at the plate all afternoon, she had some help from her defense.
HSU threatened in the top of the seventh when
Sydney Roberts drew a leadoff walk.
Kelly Sonnemann pinch ran for Roberts and advanced to second on a fielder's choice. A two-out pinch-hit single from
Julie Pena moved Sonnemann to third, but she was thrown out at the plate.
"I have to give it to them. They're a good team," Sarchett said. "Hopefully, we'll get to see them again and get some payback."
Obbema,
Tiffany Hollingsworth,
Dani Randall and
Darian Harris were named to the CCAA All-Tournament Team.
